Copper coil - be brutally honest

I have thought alot alot about contraception and I think what want to go for is the copper coil. Condoms - I don't trust myself to be honest to use them 100%, the pill partially the same, also I would rather not have contraception I have to think about all the time time. The thing going for the pill was in mainly stops ovulation, rather than stops implantation which is what I'd prefer, but I have found out the copper coil mainly prevents sperm getting near the egg in the first place over the merina which mainly stops implantation. Also, I hate the idea of taking anything weirdy and hormoney if that makes sense and am I right in thinking that copper is abit of a less unbalancing way of contraception hormone wise? I have heard about heavy periods, but I could cope with that I recon if that's one of the downsides - I am not fussed on having them stop totally or anything. Also, apart from all the bad points, are they easy to get? All I hear about is the merina thingy so was wondering if I can even get a copper one anymore, and if I can 'demand' it I guess. I would travel or pay if it came to it, if it's as good as what I can gather. Have I got this all right? Is copper coil the way to go? Or will it muck me up totally and there is a million and one horror stories I have yet to come across? If it makes any difference I do want more children Thanks

I have never really had PMT, but have always had quite heavy and painful periods but I think hormones mucking me about, or the thought that the mirena is mainly going to work by preventing implantation far outweighs even the heaviest of periods - that I can deal with I think I will definatly ask for one, good to know about the snails THank s

I have a copper coil. It is due out soon, as it has been in for nearly 5 years.

I did not want to have any hormones released in my body, neither did I want to have my periods stopped, as I was worried about missing an accidental pregnancy.

The first couple of periods were heavier than usual, and more painful, but this settled and was fine within a few months.

I will possibly have a new one fitted.

I've recently had the copper coil fitted (last month) and was due my period 9 days ago however there is no sign of them. has anyone else experianced this, is it normal? everything i have read says they can get heavier and longer but nothing about missing them. I have done a pregancy test when i was 2 days late which came out negative. can anyone help?

Hi, I just thought I'd share my experience of having the copper coil and I hope it helps you with your decision :) I've only had my copper coil in for six weeks but so far I like it.

The procedure of it being put in is painful but I'd describe it as much more unpleasant than painful. But it is over with fairly quickly. Afterwards you will experience cramps for a while, mine only lasted 2 days but they can last longer.

Didn't experience any other side affects after that, my period wasn't too bad either. It lasted for a week which was normal but it was heavier than normal on days 3-5. I think I'll have to buy a mooncup and the heavier periods shouldn't be much of a problem then. Other than that I love being hormone free!

Hope this helps x

I had the copper coil in for 2 days total and I can honestly say it was the worst experience I have ever had with contraception. When I had it put in I fainted quite badly, but this is quite like me to faint so that's ok lol. But the evening of when I had it out in I felt a burning sensation and then the pain started. The pain got so bad I went back to the doctors to get it removed after 48 hours. When the nurse removed the coil a huge load of yellow puss followed with a bit of blood. I was ok for that day largely due to relief but the next day I started to have burning pain again. The pain lasted for 6 months!! Until it disappeared. The doctors think I just reacted badly to the copper. But I think yes I reacted badly but also the coil blocked my passage way so to speak that the fluid pressure built up in my womb!! Any longer and it could have been fatal. I would never recommend the coil especially the copper one ever!! That's my experience and I want people to know it's not a good option and would prefer the pill as it's less invasive.

I know this us old but...

@minkster7 burning pain inside had been my symptom can you tell me more about it?

Minkster7 · 10/10/2023 21:07

Hello, yes I remember this. Definitely think I reacted badly to the copper. I did have a burning sensation/pain for a while after. Could also have been stress at the time added to it. But it was definitely from the coil! I worried that it may have affected my fertility but this wasn’t an issue as I’ve just had two babies in 2021 and 2022 so was all fine by then. What would you like to know? Do you have the coil in now?

@minkster7 thanks for the fast response 🙏
Congratulations 🙂 on your babies 👶
I had it in for 6 weeks then been 5 weeks since removal. Burning inside there and back passage at times. Vulva pain etc. I found out that I have polysistic overies which I think may be caused by that wtf I'm dealing with a load of stress also but I don't know I guess I wanted some reassurance that it will eventually go. Interesting that you had it for 2 days too as I thought 6 weeks may not affected me so much

Minkster7 · 10/10/2023 21:27

Thank you! 😀Ok so yes it did go away but I think because I was stressed with a job at the time I think it made my recovery worse. The burning sensation was in my pelvic area inside then it traveled up my stomach to the top of the ribs (near my sternum) later on. Then just disappeared after 6 months or so. Yes if you managed 6 weeks then maybe it wasn’t so severe so hopefully your symptoms will clear up sooner! I had no good explanation either for this. My only guess is that the reaction caused inflammation (burning sensation) and then the inflammation traveled up my body. I’ve always had a sensitive tummy etc so I think anything will affect it. Your PCOS could be possibly caused by that but hopefully will subside once all the copper leaves your system?

@minkster7
Yes think I was getting the pains
And burning week 4 of having it in.. 6 months seems ages. You and 1 more person I found on here about burning sensations. Yes I just want it gone 😔 x

Minkster7 · 10/10/2023 21:37

I’m really sorry about the burning pains. Please be reassured it will go eventually! They have never came back etc. Maybe try ibuprofen if my inkling of it being inflamed is right? There was no harm done just that burning sensation, so if you can block it out with medication in the meantime it might help?
