Has anyone ever heard of anaemia being caused by stopping smoking?

My Dad was a 50 a day man, and has stopped smoking dead due to a bad case of pneumonia. that was about 6 weeks ago and now GP has said he has anaemia which they are looking into. I mentioned this to a nursey freind and shehas a vague memory of stopping smoking causing anaemia.

Any one else ever heard of this, cant see anything on google.

Never heard of it. Has he perhaps been run down and off his normal food because of the pneumonia, and so that's why he hasn't been getting as much iron? I would have thought there would be many other explanations.

It was something to do with the body over compensating due to the smoking and then when the smoking stops......oh i dunno, haemoglobin summert. It made sense at the time

My late Nan became anaemic after she had stopped smoking. Smoking affects blood cells and their makeup.

It certainly warrants further investigation as this is most likely to be caused by all the years of smoking itself rather than the cessation of it. They need to determine why the anaemia is there.
