Hi, I have a wisdom tooth that has decayed. It is extreamly painful right now, and has been all day. I went to the dentists, but none of them were there and I just got a help line number. It'll probubly be at least monday when I can be seen.
I've been taking 2 paracetamol and 2 neurofen every 4 hours but it's still really bad. Does anyone know what else I could try ? I've also tried clove oil, but that really stang my gum and tongue.
Does anyone know if there's anything else I could try ?

Fair enough, susie! More wanted to make the OP aware that GPs don't always prescribe, didn't want her to waste too much time if she didn't have to.

Flighttattendant · 05/06/2010 13:02

Well the NHS knowledge base does say (going off on a tangent here!) that a/b's aren't indicated for normal healthy people with a tooth abscess, however I didn't take them for mine and just had the tooth out..and because the infectionw as so bad, the anaesthetic didn't work and it was very VERY painful having it removed.

Saying that I might well do the same again next time - i hate antibiotics.

I can't stand it either. It makes me feel sick, shaky, really very nervous and worried.

Much worse than other antibiotics.

PosyPetrovaPauline · 05/06/2010 20:37

vile stuff - i have sworn never to take it again - evil!

Flighttattendant · 05/06/2010 21:04

Fossils! Am I right?! (sorry OP)

Wink

metronidazole is a particularly horrible anti b. Just happens to be very effective with dental abscess. Its in fact the only antibiotic which you absolutely cannot drink alcohol with. It makes you incredibly ill. i.e. sick etc. Most you can actually drink with contrary to popular belief.

I'm interested to hear your side effects from taking it, horrible as they are. The side effects you describe are unusual.

There are of course other antibiotics you can take for dental infection if you have this reaction. It just happens to be the most effective. However there are others which will help too.

differentnameforthis · 06/06/2010 02:21

Susie, those symptoms are not unusual..they are documented side effects (albeit rarer) of Flagyl (metronidazole) or in the range of...

"Other side effects may include numbness, tingling, pain or weakness in hands or feet.

Less common side effects include vaginal irritation, discharge or dryness (not present before use of the medicine); clumsiness or unsteadiness; mood or mental changes; skin rash; hives; redness or itching"

Also, yes, you can drink alcohol with most abs, but it lessens the effects of the abs, therefore not completely clearing up the infection & requiring a repeat.

But in all fairness, abs last a week at max, usually. So I would worry about someone unable to last that long without a drink!

differentnameforthis · 06/06/2010 02:22

That quoted paragraph came from here

differentnameforthis · 06/06/2010 02:26

How are you OP? Any relief?

susiecutiebananas · 06/06/2010 02:33

Differentnameforthis: yes, documented side effects. yes rarer. I was interested in more than one person saying they have similar side effects when they are rarer - unusual, mere semantics no?

I feel all my posts are being picked through with a fine tooth comb by you, excuse the pun, so will step out of this thread now. I was trying to help the OP with my personal experience and also my knowledge professionally.

Forgive me for trying to help someone out.

differentnameforthis · 06/06/2010 02:53

Not picking at all..just having a discussion...which is what I thought MN was about.

And seeing that MN has thousands of members, I would expect more than one person to have rare side effects to meds, to be fair.

I am sorry if you thought I was being picky.

Flighttattendant · 06/06/2010 05:51

My opinion (no professional knowledge) is that loads of people suffer from the 'less common' ones, while EVERYONE feels like pants on the stuff

differentnameforthis · 06/06/2010 08:33

Exactly, Flight!

Im SO surprised that you have all had such aweful side effects. I've given both oral and IV Metronidazole to hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of patients and never ever had these side effects reported. Ever.

There are other antibiotics you can take, of course, which will help with tooth pain, infection etc...

MargaretAtwood3660 · 06/06/2010 15:09

Don't worry Susie, they probably all just stop taking it after 3 days...

PosyPetrovaPauline · 06/06/2010 20:22

I have never heard of anyone being happy when on metronidazole

It is so vile that the prospect of taking it makes me tearful and I am not a wimpy person

waking up in the morning on the second day of treatment
with that vile taste in my mouth makes me want to duck back under the duvet and hibernate for the rest of the seven- long- 4 times a day - week

Never again

sandcastles · 07/06/2010 01:43

I had met for 14 days following an infection caused by the mirena. It was horrendous...I had a horrible taste, upset stomach, was moody & it made my anxiety much much worse!

I don't think it will be something I take again in a hurry!

susiecutiebananas · 08/06/2010 15:08

margretatwood they cant, if i've given it IV to them!
I don't mean my wink in a nasty cruel mwhahahahah way! I just mean it gets given IV regularly until end of course, so their not able to stop taking it after 3 days. But, as I say, I've never had a patient tell me of any side effects, thank god! I don't think the ward could cope with a load of people ( and trust me there are usually a good 3-4 sometimes many more) having the side effects some of you talk of! Although, they are nearly always on it along with another IVAB. maybe that helps... maybe having the both together makes it not so bad... >
