Hi all

Nearly 6 months since my first child still suffering badly with SPD pain now concentrated at my SI joints. Been told I have an unstable sacrum. Been advised by a specialist physio (who I found through pelvic partnership website) to have prolotherpay. Anyone with good long term results from this? I am a vet and dont want to not be able to return to a job I love eventually. Anyone better results with pelvic fusuion surgery??

Any advice appreciated

Karen, Do you know if it's just a matter of time to see if your sacrum will become more stable? I'm sorry I don't know much about that but I am 3 months after my first child and still have problems with my pubic symphysis joint. My SI joints have slowly become more 'stronger' (my description) and I have been told it may just be a matter of time for the hormones to stop affecting the ligaments. I have also being doing a lot of tummy exercises on my transverse abdominals and this has really helped my lower back and made me feel a lot stronger. x

Hi,
Hope that your problems in the symphysis joint will resolve over time-mine mostly gone, very little pain in the middle now. Just been left with an unstable sacrum which can apparently happen. Hope my SI joints will improve also just given time. Feel a bit in the middle of advice; orthopaedics say just come back in a month... and specialist physio is very pro active wanting me to try prolotherapy but it is a medical trial and costs £3000. Exercises on your trans abs I've been told is the key, but be careful your definitely using the right muscles, my physio keeps having to put needles into the muscles in my abd to release all the tension. Am seeing orthopaedics again on Mon so will let you know if they say any different x

I once had prolotherapy but not on my pelvis. It was brilliant. Worked wonders. But it wore off after a few years, so isn't a long term cure. It depends on how active you are I think.

But I would recommend it if you are really struggling with the spd.

OH crikey, Karen, that's some decision to have to make. I wasn't planning to take a year off on mat leave as not sure my finances can cope, but I think I am forced to do it to see how much better I will get. I'm in Glasgow area and no-one up here seems to talk of prolotherapy, I've just been told it will get better of it's own accord, which I am kind of holding out for. I long for the day when I can just walk normally without much pain, and then maybe even get back to running.
A medical trial, it makes me think with caution. Although bathbuns has said it worked for her. Why would you have to be part of a medical trial if this is a therapy that has been proven to work? Sorry if I sound down on the idea? I actually would have to be at the end of my tether to consider something like this, as a kind of last resort- I just know if it didn't work for me then I'd be gutted and would think there was no where else to turn. That's why I am doing the wait and see game. I know everyone is different though.
Very very interesting what you have said about the tension in your stomach. My physio has just given me the exercises to do but I went online and researched Julie Tupler method as I had a large split in my tummy muscles and doing the tupler method I've brought the gap down from 8 fingers to almost 2 at the moment. I have felt strengthening in my pubic symp joint and my lower back and am sure this is all connected. However, I have noticed that if I do too much pelvic floor exercises coupled with the transverse exercises that I feel as if I need a pee all the time. I should probably mention this to my physio?
Gosh I don't know how you are going to move forward with this one. It does sound positive for the prolo, very tempting but again quite costly. But then, if you had the money then it would be so worth the relief you are going to get. IS there a time limit on the medical trial?
Good luck xx

mumvet1 found this link on facebook, don't know if this helps:

it's a discussion re prolotherapy, if you look for pelvic instability network PINS and then look in the discussions area

Thank you all for your help. Been on PINS think is the scottish equivalent of the pelvic partnership, and found two women with very similar problems to me in my area so we could chat about docors etc.

As for the sacrum's stability, after I gave up hope it was still in proper place when the physio checked. So current plan is going to Gloucester for 7d of intense physio with further follow ups for next 2 months or so, if no headway then think will have to try the prolotherapy.

I think for some people it is a matter of time for the pelvis to become stable, but when then is a prolonged laxity of the ligaments, doing the physio to stregthen core muscles may not be enough which is where the prolotherapy comes into it.

Have learned through MUCH reading recently NEVER to have plates/pins in pelvis have spoken to many people now who have been made worse by it, and then there is no going back and once the joints are fused physio etc will not be able to help, so just let everyone with this problem know to research VERYcarefully before agreeing to it!! is very scarey, one woman I spoke to only 22 is now mostly bed bound. Lesson is dont automatically trust the doctors and question everything (never thought I'd say that having a medical back ground but SPD seems to be very elusive to them)

Hi Karen - so to gatecrash but can I ask if you got the prolotherapy in the end and if so, was it worthwhile. I am facing the decision soon.

Thanks.
