Any advice for recurring sore throat - improves with antibiotics then returns.

Hi

I had what a initially thought ws a flu like virus about 6 weeks ago. Fluey symptoms and very sore throat with swollen lymph glands. Lasted a few days then improved only for the same symptoms to reappear a few days later.

I saw my GP at this point who said it could be strep throat and gave me antibiotics. Sure enough, within a day or so of starting the course, I was feeling much better. Then, about a week after finishing the course the sore throat returned. I was prescribed another course of a different antibiotics which I was taking until last Saturday.

Again, things improved as soon as I started taking it and was fine all last week and over the weekend, but the sore throat returned yesterday.

It is sore, red, dry and sort of itchy feeling if that makes sense.

I've made another GP appt for next week but don't want anymore antibiotics.

I started taking Manuka honey today as it;s reputed to be good for treating sore throats, but I just wish it would go and not return!

It might be worth adding that I have a ten week old baby so sleep is at a premium right now and I guess my immune system is not as strong as it would normally be.

I'd appreciate any tips/advice.

Thanks!

I can truly sympathise, I've had a sore throat for most of the last six months, and had three lots of antibiotics, and like yours a few days after I finish the course it returns (although I have been clear for about three weeks now!). The last GP I saw recommended changing my toothbrush about two days into the course (to prevent reinfection), and also using an antiseptic mouth wash (she recommended Oraldene or Difflam), I took her advice, so fingers crossed.

Thanks foggerty, that's helpful.

I'll try both of those tips!
