These mouth ulcers are driving me crazy...

I have always been really susceptible to mouth ulcers and currently am infested with the things. I have about four, and they are REALLY getting me down, especially since every time one goes, it seems to be replaced with another...

Does anyone have any suggestions for painkilling or ideally for getting rid of the damned things? Some of them are so far back in my mouth I couldn't reach them with Bonjela or anything (which I have never found that effective anyway). The extra complicating factor is that I am breastfeeding, so there may be things I can't use... But I'll try anything I can!

Acortyl in oralbase is the only thing I have ever found to work, not so much at numbing but gets rid of them quick. For when it's bad I tend to just get a bit of salt on my fingers...oww!!! But gets rid of them!

For ones at the back (I get them on my tonsils sometimes) I had some kind of antiseptic throat spray, can't remember what it is called but it was green and had a long wand for spraying the back of the throat.

If you can reach them with a cotton bud then anbesol liquid is great stuff - stings a bit to start then numbs them. I use this combined with oraldene mouthwash to control mouth ulcers.

Failing that get some difflam mouthwash. Helps to numb them a bit - whole mouth feels a bit funny but if it helps the pain it is worth it.

bumperlicious - green spray is difflam

anbesol liquid on them will hurt like f* but really helps get rid

ibuprofen and paracetamol together also helps if they get really bad

adcortyl in orabase helps soothe but is a pain to apply

my recurrent ulcers were massively improved by taking spatone iron supplements in orange juice - absolutely swear by it as its seems to have boosted my immune system no end

i am an expert, before i got pregnant with ds i had them for agggges

wilkos · 01/06/2010 20:32

that sounds like i am suggesting that getting pregnant is a way of getting rid of them! that isnt what I meant!

that would be a teensy bit drastic

I sympathise - I've had chemo mouth ulcers and it is very unpleasant to have a really sore mouth. The things I used were, adcortyl - both the gel stuff and tablets you sort of dissolve in your mouth up near the ulcer(don't know whether you can them off prescription). Difflam numbs it a bit, but I found didn't really heal as such. The thing that worked well for me was 2 dissolvable aspirin/dispirin in about a third/half a glass of water, give it a really good woosh round your mouth several times a day. (You don't swallow, so its OK even if you can't normally take aspirin). I'd also take pain killers and be careful with what you eat until they've healed (no citrus, sharp/ crispy things etc.) HTH

i am the world's biggest expert on mouth ulcers, as i get them ALL the time and have tried everything!! I had all but given up when I saw something called Oral Medic, it's sold behind the counter, and it's a liquid that you put on with a cotton bud, provided in the pack, and it really really stings, but it is the best thing ever. It forms a coating over the ulcer, which allows it to dry out and therefore heal. And, try to get as much sleep as poss and stay un-stressed, as they are definitely linked. Good luck, I can feel your pain!

Bumperlicious · 01/06/2010 22:23

Difflam, that's it. I've never got on with anbesol, it seemed to make them worse. The problem with ulcers at the back of your throat is that mouth washes don't reach them as you have to close off your throat to use them.

Never heard of Oral Medic but will give that a try next time. Think I have tried every other remedy though.

Haven't had any for a while though, maybe being pg has helped.

ginger2000 · 01/06/2010 22:48

i second the swilling with asprin advice - its the only thing that has ever worked for me - anbesol et all just wears off too quickly.
I've also been prescribed corsodyl mouthwash which does seem to help clear them up quickly but has a tendency to stain teeth.

i hope they go quickly

wilkos · 01/06/2010 23:17

actually i'm not sure I meant anbesol - 'bonjela once' is the thing with the cotton buds. that is great.

that really stings, but in a good 'mouth ulcer annihilating' way!

Flowerface · 02/06/2010 11:57

Bonjela once is brill, but you aren't allowed it if breastfeeding (I think...).

Im plagued with them, your Dr can give you a steroid pellet type thing which disolves in your mouth, tastes rotten but sorts them out...untill the next one appears!! Good luck

Milliways · 04/06/2010 18:18

I was plagued with these, but also get heartburn. I now take a low daily dose of Lansoprazole, and Bingo! No ulcers or heartburn.

Speak to your GP if they keep re-occurring. Adcortyl was fab but is no longer made here in Orabase

grapeandlemon · 04/06/2010 18:27

I think you can cure them nutritionally, iron esp I think.

LittleSilver · 04/06/2010 20:53

I got prescribed steroids once too; my next GP muttered something about using a sledgehammer to crack a nut and suggested bonjela

Yes, because that will really help.
