The dentist is not an option. 4 weeks wait and the nhs people wont give me an appointment because i have a dentist.

I have been in pain on and off for 13 weeks, i have a total dentist phobia and im 27 weeks pregnant so all i can take is paracetamol. Ive tried clove oil and am now trying the new colgate toothpaste (rubbing it on the tooth). I have antibiotics for a chest infection and had hoped that would get rid of the toothache at the same time but it just seems to be getting worse.

HELP ME PLEASE im i soooo much pain

I was under the impression that dentists were supposed to have emergency appointments each day for people in pain. I would phone tomorrow again and get stroppy if you need to. Leave off the clove oil that could burn your gum. Hope you are feeling better soon. Could also try a cold compress on your jaw at the side it is sore. Sorry I can't suggest much more.

no such thing as an emergency appt at your dental practice ?

Most dental practices keep a slot free for emergencies.

red37 · 31/05/2010 19:16

I was going to suggest clove oil until I read your post...oh dear poor you!!

I know this may sound awful but my dad had such bad toothache once that he pulled it out eventually himself...4 hours of constant pain drove him to it...btw disclaimer pls dont do that
could you not try some relaxation techniques?
or maybe phone emergency dentist in the morning?

Do you need fillings?

I was given an emergency appointment a few weeks ago and they said i needed antibiotics but wasnt sure what i could have given my history of m/c. Told me to see doctor for antibis. Doctor said it was dental pain and to see dentist. Went beck to dentist who said the same and said until the infection was gone he couldnt do anything as the gum wouldnt numb if there was an abcess and also the risk of hitting it with a needle.

call nhs direct they should give you a number for emergency dentist. could be a abscess and you will have to do something about it, the pain will drive you crazy otherwise!

in the meantime hot water rinses help and i found rubbing in sensitive tooth toothpast helped but only in the short term

RED i was booked in to just get them all out as pregnancy really messed my teeth up last time. I had the appointment to go for a general and have it done. They wouldnt do it as i found out a week before i was pregnant. I am praying it goes away then when the twins are here i can eventually go and get it done. BTW 2 of my teeth have just crumbled (not right now but in the past couple of weeks). The same thing happened to me last time

star sorry to hear of your pain - how awful, i hate toothache it is the PITS!!!
you can take codeine whilst pg.... i had acute sinusitis at about 25 weeks pg and i took paracetamol every four hours and codeine two hours later (and then every four hours)...
or Cocodamol is a paracetamol/codeine alternative - but don't take any other paracetamol based products.

might help?
Can you try your Out of Hours GP service too? You NEED to see someone...asap.

Starshaker tell your dentist to check the individual antibiotic entry in his BNF. I would expect him to have one, if not he should call a pharmacist for advice. There is also a contact number he call for advice on medication in pregnancy. Pregnancy will reduce the choice of antibiotics that may be used but doesn't mean no antibiotics at all. I am on your behalf at the dentist passing the buck like that, I have never known a GP to prescribe for a dental problem. I do agree that the infection should be cleared first but he should make a little more effort to try and clear it up especially as you are limited on your pain relief options.

southeastastra · 31/05/2010 19:30

was going to say they could take time to work

starshaker · 31/05/2010 19:31

Oh and to make things more difficult i cant actually lie on my back anymore or i pass out (not that i would mind the dentist doing what he wanted while im out cold but it seems to be frowned upon) Why does pregnancy make things sooo difficult lol
