How thirsty is diabetes thirsty?

I worry about getting diabetes because I am high risk - hereditary, overweight (I'm working on it), PCOS etc. I'm taking Metformin at the moment to help with the weight loss. But today, and to a lesser extent yesterday, I have felt so tired and very thirsty. But I don't know what "diabetes thirsty" is.

Today I've had two cups of tea, two cups of coffee and probably about 1.5 l of water. And right now I am about to go drink another large glass of water as I'm very thirsty.

Should I be concerned, or am I just a bit tired from a very hectic few weeks before we take some time off next week?

Why don't you call your surgery and ask if they can dip your wee for you if you drop by with a sample?

Because I feel like a paranoid twit?

If I still feel this way tomorrow, I'll do it. I will try an early night and see if it's just tiredness or even just a mild sore throat that feels like thirst but isn't. If not. you're right, I must just ask them to do a quickie test.

One of my childhood memories of my father was that he was always thirsty. It was a running joke in the family, before he was diagnosed, that he always had a (non-alcoholic) drink in his hand. I had pregnancy related diabetes and remember that nothing would quench my thirst.

I think you should go and get a test, just to put your mind at rest. But remember it is a warm day, so everyone is probably feeling more thirsty than normal.

You are not a paraniod twit, early diagnosis is really important. When's the last time you were tested?

BlingLoving · 26/05/2010 15:16

Not for years actually. Last time was probably about five years ago.

Okay, if I am like this tomorrow, i will go.

Not a paranoid twit at all!

I'm a practice nurse and would be more than happy to do this for a patient. Only takes a minute and can hopefully put your mind at rest.

High blood sugar thirst is not like being thirsty, normally. not sure i can describe it.
please just pop a sample to them today. then you won't have to worry. atleast your'll know.

I think some phamarcists will do this test for you (prick finger for blood sample) and then you won't have the "embarassment" of the Dr.

I have an appointment tomorrow. If it's not diabetes, I think it might be some kind of low grade infection which is probably worth checking out. Thanks for the advice.
