Mirena Coil

I had the mirena coil fitted about 7 months ago for heavy periods and haven't been happy with it, but my doctor recommended I give it 6 months to get the benefits. I am now losing big clots, have a low iron level with extreme tiredness, depressed and generally feel rotten. Could the coil make me feel depressed and tired or is it the low iron level, which I am now taking tablets for?

To be honest i think it could be both

I had the same thing with the mirena i only had it in for 4 mths but i couldnt cope with being so tired, low, fed up and generally so unwell (along with weight gain)

So i went to the nurse and had it removed no questions asked she was great said she takes lots out for the same reasons

After a week i started to feel better and touch wood i have been regualr and lightish ever since it was taken out in jan

Thanks Elloeise, I think your comments have confirmed what I was thinking and I will have it removed.

I had mine fitted about 4 months ago, and have not yet stopped bleeding. I feel bloated, irritable and tired and I am going to have mine removed.

I did ask my GP to take it out when I went to have it checked, but she persuaded me to persevere- she said give it 6 months. I have now had enough!

It can work brilliantly for some women, unfortunately not me.

Its strange that it works so well for some and not others, my childrens' swimming teacher swears by it and doesn't have any bleeding.

Ten months of hell for me.

It caused severe mood swings in me and made my depression suicidally bad.

No sex drive.

Non stop bleeding.

Acne.

Had it out, took Cerazette, it did the same thing.

So we started using condoms and w/drawal and well, had a missed M/C and then DS, our third.

Then DH had the snip.

pilates · 25/05/2010 21:02

thats a coincidence expat, my friend has just recommended cerazette to me as she gets no bleeding and feels great on it. Definitely don't want any more children so need to get something sorted, husband hates condoms.

wow, you went through 7 months of feeling like crap .... because your husband "hates condoms"? somehow that doesn't seem like a fair situation.... would he go through 7 months of feeling like crap so that sex was a little bit more enjoyable for you? just a thought.

[ps i gave up the pill years ago (it started giving me non-reversible facial discoloring) and we have used condoms ever since as I don't like the idea of further biological experiments on my body. we are done having kids so if hubby dislikes condoms he is welcome to get a vasectomy.....]

expatinscotland · 25/05/2010 21:28

Dh hated condoms, too. I'm not fond of them myself, either.

But couldn't take combined pill as have hypertension. Couldn't use Depo or implant due to hormonally based depression (PND). Don't agree with how copper coil works. Mirena and cerazette didn't work for me.

So it was condoms or nowt.

Female sterlisation is still an op under GA, painfully bloated abdomen afterwards, much increased risk of ectopic pregnancy if you do conceive.

So he went for the snip. Went well, he barely swelled up and well, it's been grand for our sex life!

We're like newlyweds again.

I had the Mirena coil taken out yesterday evening for the following reasons:
depression
joint pain
mood swings
weight gain
exhaustion (could stay in bed all day some days!)
migraines every month
lack of concentration and focus
Foof odour and weird discharge (tmi i know)

I told my GP about these symptoms and was expecting to be told I was crackers and that the coil wasn't the cause, but she said that is how it is with some women and whipped it out there and then! DH has volounteered for the snip now

I stuck with it for 18 months and although it sorted my heavy periods, they are preferable to the above side effects. I also have a friend who thinks her Mirena is the best thing since sliced bread, horses for courses and all that.

Mumintroll if you read my original post I said I was put on the mirena coil for heavy periods not contraception.

I'm phoning hospital today to make an appointment to get it removed.

Thanks everyone for your input.
