Lazer eye surgery - should I?

After years of wearing glasses I have had enough. Just can not get contacts in my eye, never mind out, so have toyed with the idea of lazer, but as could never really justify the cost haven't seriously considered it. The other day my mum saw a letter Optimax sent me (every so often they send me their special offers after I enquired few years ago) where they are offering 2 for 1 (eyes) on there advanced surgery and she has offered to pay for it. Now I don't know what to do.... help, advise please!

I am too much of a fearty, but I wear lenses no bother, so I see the attraction.

I know a few folk who have had it done and (pardon the pun) haven't looked back.

Only you know really!

I've had it done. When I first had it done and for about 6 months afterwards I wasn't particularly complimentary about it (although I won't give detail here!).

But now, further down the line, I am so pleased I had it done because I got so very fed up of glasses and contact lenses.

The only thing that disappointed me is that I paid for extra (wave front I think?) whiich in some cases can improve night vision and glare, but it didn't work with me.

Overall I'd say if you can have it done then go for it!

I had it done 7 years and wished I had had it done sooner. Lifechanging not wearing glasses.
However, I took the advice of my optician as to where to go and a local hosp had an optical centre with one of the county's leading eye surgeons and paid extra to have him operate. Cost more than going with Optimax but was reassured as on the day I had my assessment he turned downn several people as they were not suitable candidates (so not just taking people's money IYSWIM).
So please use someone recommended!
Best of Luck - I have never regretted it!

research research and research some more. check your individual surgeons success rate. and steer clear of high st opticians that have branched out. its a fairly knew type of surgery and be aware that your eyes can still alter after having it done - you still need 2 yearly eye tests. and you will still need reading specs in later life (usually starts mid 40's onward depending on your prescription)presbyopia is a muscle related change and nothing to do with your prescription.
so id research it very well first. i worked in optics for 10 years.

Do you mind if I hijack and ask anyone who has had it done - would you do it if you had one lazy eye, meaning effectively you only use one eye to see?

I'm fed up of glasses and can't wear lenses, but would be completely scuppered if laser surgery were to go wrong.

they would assess the risks first - and they wont do anything if they think there is a chance of you losing your sight in the good eye, its probably doubtful they would do it.

Hmm thanks I thought as much.

I also had it done 7 years ago and it's one of the best decisions I ever made. I think I had mine done at Optimax though can't remember for sure.

My eyes were only about -1 but I still needed glasses and had worn them for 20 years. Couldn't wear lenses as I had dry, sensitive eyes.

I had it done on the Monday, drove again on the Wednesday and back to work. After it's done the eyes continue to improve for about 2 months. I needed moisturising eye drops for a while but that was it.

It is a scary thought but I'm so glad I did it.

Thanks everyone for your responses, I'm pretty sure I want to go ahead, I think!
