Constant stream of phlegm while lying down - impossible to sleep

I have been with my partner now for six years and am beginning to find that these health problems he has are really putting pressure on our relationship and our family life. I was wondering if anyone else had any experience of any of this kind of condition.

When he goes to bed at night phlegm often starts pouring down from his nose into his throat. He often wakes as though he is drowning in it, and can be awake for hours and hours. This is always worse when he has a cold, no matter how small, and he catches every cold going. By comparison his immune system seems much weaker than mine, something I might get for a day or two mildly, he will have badly for a fortnight. Last night he only managed two hours sleep, the night before 3-4 and so it goes on.

Apparently he has had it for many years, and prior to meeting me he says he had 'all the tests' for allergies etc and they could find nothing. He had his tonsils out when he was about 12 too.

This puts so much pressure on our life, as he is completely exhausted by the weekend and spends much of the weekend resting and catching up with sleep. He is so cranky and irritable. We did move out of London, and it does appear it is worse when he is in London, which leads me to think that it may be linked to pollution and irritants in the air, but why does his body respond this way, when it doesn't to anyone else?

He blames it on 'stress'. I can't believe it is possible that it is just a matter of stress.

All thoughts and experiences appreciated.

Thanks.

Yep, I suffer, nothing like this, its a condition called non-allergic rhinitus/vasomotor. What he is describing sounds like post nasal drip caused by catarrh.

Also certain foods seem to make mine worse like wine, spicy etc. (personally all this dairy thing I ignore as there is no eveidence).

Mainly I get blocked up and deff worse in the winter with the heating on and if the pressure is low (thundery) and the pressure in my ears etc feels horrible.

I have read that doctors can prescribe pills for over runny nose so it may help.

Thanks so much bacon. I've mentioned this to him. I also read something about yeast infections causing excess catarrh.

I had a short course of steriods to help build myself up recently that really helped.

I'm not a fan of this yeast thing either. All the info I have read really dismisses all this fad.

Im not surprised he is so run down if he's not sleeping. What about his diet and weight? I inherited my nasal problems from my father so is there any family problems?

I think stress causes so many problems and then the stress of this aliment is just causing the situation to be worse. I wouldnt be surprised if he was slightly depressed too.

If it is rhinitis can he not get a medication for it? My friend has an inhaler type thing for this all year round, really works for her.
