Conflicting opinion from internet and Doctor!

Hi,

I had a stroke last year and was taken straight off of the pill (that was the only thing the docs could put it down to). My GP has suggested that I start having the progesterone only injection and that this would be totally safe for me. When I googled this on the internet every site said that this wasn't recommended for people with a history of strokes and clotting.

Does anyone have any experience of these injections after a stroke?

Thanks!

Why dont you consider having a coil (no hormones) fitted, they are usually very protective and I wouldnt risk putting any more hormones in your body if I were you.

Why not go back to your GP and ask what other options would be appropriate for you.

LostArtofKeepingASecret · 24/05/2010 21:52

Well, I generally have more faith in GPs than Google. But for your own piece of mind I think you should go back and talk about it. As others have said, there are loads of alternatives.

I'm slightly mystified MrsHarry - I've tried a bit of a Google myself, and the sites I have looked at tend to agree with your doctor, that the mini-pill carried a lower risk of stroke and blood clots than the combined pill - e.g. this page from Netdoctor.

Which pages said otherwise?

Sounds really worrying. I hope your health is improving.

it is not the mini-pill that has been suggested though, it is the injection - Depo-Provera.

oh blimey what was I thinking! sorry mrsharry, thanks seona [butts out]

I agree with the other poster - you should have an IUD fitted - I'm onto my second copper coil - no hormones at all - and it's fine.

Remember that doctors aren't always right and don't have all the information.

I think Depo-Provera's guidelines state that it should not be given to women with a history of stroke while on Depo-Provera, rather than with a history of stroke at all.

But TBH I'd not be keen on Depo-Provera anyway. The rate and duration of side-effects are too high for me to be happy with (although my sister did use it quite happily for years).
