My 3yo DS has hit his head- what would you advise?

My mum is looking after DS today. I am at work. She has just called to say he has fallen from a chair and hit his head at the back. He cried for a couple of minutes and it bled a little. He now seems fine. I told her I would take him to the walk in centre on my way home (will pick him up at 4pm).

Now I am wondering if I am overreacting and should just keep an eye on him. Or underreacting and should ask her to take him right away (I can leave work now and meet her there).

Can anyone advise me?

Sorry if this seems a ridiculous question- believe it or not DS is not very accident prone so have not had a serious head bang yet!

It's always a difficult one.
I think if he cried straight away and was definitely not knocked out or anything then it should be ok - just keep a close eye on him.

Then again if it's not a lot of hassle it might be worth just getting it checked - what did he hit it on?

It depends on which bit at the back he hit, there are areas that are weaker then others. I'm fussy, I'd get mine checked out. Working in a hospital doesn't help as I see what can go wrong far too much.

Hope everything is ok - did you take him?

i would agree that getting him checked is best.

with bleeding head wounds, it's best to get them looked at.

look our for vomiting/drowsiness/dizziness afterwards.

I'd have taken him to get checked over just to be safe, especially if he fell from a height that is higher than him standing normally iyswim.
Hope he's ok

A head injury can exhibit symptoms up to 72 hours after the initial accident.

Things to watch out for include:

bleeding from the nose or ears.
dizziness and loss of consciousness
pupils being unequal size
headache
vomiting
confusion
excess sleepiness

Thank you for all your replies. Sorry I didn't respond sooner- I usually post from my blackberry and for some reason its not letting me post at the moment.

I called GP who was happy to see DS, particularly as his head had been bleeding. She gave him the 'once over' and pronounced him OK but said to keep my eye on him.

He's been fine thank goodness.

Thanks again!!
