I've had hearing aids for the past 10 years or so. It's like a whole new world when you first start wearing them.

i've had hearing aids for the last 4 years (have a condition called otoschlerosis). the first days with them were very wierd indeed - didn't realise quite how awful my hearing was until i got them. very much just part of life now - although i think my hearing is still deteriorating and don't seem to be picking up as much as i used to. happy to answer any questions you might have.

I don't have aids but my dd has. They are digital aids (Danalogic). They are really easy to care for as basically they just need cleaning and batteries changing when necessary. I bought a cleaning kit from a company called Connevans (check out their website) which you will find really handy (if your audiologist doesnt provide these things). Your aids will take a bit of time to get used to - your voice will sound a bit funny (tinny) to yourself etc.

Hi I wear 2 hearing aids, have done since I was a teenager. The NHS provides digital hearing aids, free batteries and moulds and piping. You can get different type of fittings into your ear - for more severe hearing losses they generally need to put a mould into your ear that fills it, but for your loss you probably could get away with their newer almost invisible tubings and small cups - you cannot tell anyone has a hearing aid in with them. So do ask if they haven't already told you.

My hearing aids are Phonak (Superfront's but going to have Vaida's soon), but am profoundly deaf. Spirit 3's are quite often distributed where I live for moderate losses and they are quite small. They come in different colours (most aids do) so you can blend it to your hair colour, skin colour or fashion if you desire. Do ask if they don't give you a choice.

By best advice is make sure you go back to audiology if you struggling with it, they are like hearing computers thesedays and lots of tweaks can improve things.

All teh best.

babyjamas I have the same condition but have had the op on both ears and now have perfect hearing - let me know if you are considering the op and have any questions I might be able to answer!

pranma · 30/05/2010 21:35

I have NHS hearing aids for severe loss in one ear and moderate in the other[result of childhood measles].I hate my aids and rarely wear them.I fancy the sort that fit into spectacle legs but fear they may be prohibitively expensive.

Keziahhopes · 31/05/2010 16:01

pranma - nhs can now give out hearing aids of all different fits so why not go back to them and see what else they can offer you?

aristocat · 01/06/2010 11:47

i have a fitting date for 15 june ....... its only 2 wks away
