DD had nits a couple of weeks ago, which we managed to get rid of, but she's been left with lots of eggs in her hair which I can't get out. Any ideas?

nitty gritty comb

Hello 123
Actually the nits are the eggs -the insects are lice. The eggs will probably have already hatched, some of them, so you need to de-louse again and then follow a really rigourous combing routine with conditioner and a nitty-gritty comb. IIRC it's every day for the first 3 days, then every two days for 6 days, then every three days till your up to the 21st day.

You can stop if you have 3 combs in a row with no nits (eggs) on the comb

Get a bright light so you can see what you're doing, and pinch them out with your fingernails; I read that they have to feed within minutes of hatching out or they die, and they can only feed by climbing down the hairshaft, so they are harmless flicked onto the floor.

The eggs tend to be concentrated in same areas of the head, especially behind ears and near the nape of the neck.

Very satisfying to remove eggs, and you can get it all done tonight!!

if you do that I absolutely guarantee that in two months time you will have another infestation. You will say oh no! not another one, we've only just got rid of the last lot!

It will be the last lot's great grandchildren.

I PROMISE YOU.

Do what? Remove the eggs how I said or was that a reply to something else? Because I know from experience that mere finger-nail removal works (and not just for a 2 month reprieve) -- although I agree it sounds like OP needs to keep looking for hatched out crawlies, too.

DecorHate · 20/05/2010 19:09

Yes to Nitty Gritty - the only thing I have tried that does remove the eggs

Thanks for the advice.

I've been combing every 2-3 days for the last 2 weeks with a metal comb (not a nitty gritty though), so Im pretty sure I've broken the life cycle cleared everything that's alive. What's left is lots of white cases that appear to be superglued to her hair, and aren't coming out on the comb.

I put her hair in plaits for school today and then had to take it down again as you could see little white specks.

I use a bug busting kit which has a very fine tooth comb and gets all the nits out.
The trick for empty nitshells is to have dripping wet hair but NO conditioner, so comb with conditioner to remove the lice, then rinse and leave it dripping wet and comb again.

Kudos to those with the patience to do fingernail picking, combing takes about half an hour each dd, fingernails would take forever (and cost me dearly in chocolate buttons)
