Has anyone had a septorhinoplasty?

Hi, i'm due to have this op in a few weeks to correct a deviated septum. The hospital info says you need to take two weeks off work but I am at home with the kids so DH will be taking a few days off to help.

Can anyone advise me on recovery time and how soon I will realistically be able to look after the kids? The youngest will be 20 months so still quite a handful!

My dh had this surgery about 12 years ago. He was back at work the next day. His only discomfort was his throat as a result of the anaesthetist pulling the gauze away without dampening it first.
Good luck.

Thanks Kreecher. I am even more confused now! They have told me it would be two weeks off work, an overnight stay and then stay indoors for a week after, which is very different to your husbands experience.

I'm rather nervous about this op so if anyone as any other experience that would be great!

I almost had this done a few years ago - I ended up having laser surgery on my eyes instead! I couldn't breathe well when wearing glasses with a moderately deviated septum.

I think that the post-op varies quite significantly with the severity of the deviation, so I'm not sure other people's experience is much help.

Had mine done years ago and went back to work 2 days later. The end of my nose is a bit soft now and i can squash it. Mind you i have also broken it twice doing sports.
Was on a mixed ward and only stayed in overnight as i was last on the operating list.

sockonmyhead · 24/05/2010 07:35

It's not a bad deviation but I can only breathe properly through one nostril so a bit annoying! Not much liking the idea of having my nose broken thou...

Thank you for your experiences, am really struggling to understand why I would need two weeks off work.

i can still only breathe thro one nostril and now i snore too.

You'll certainly need a few days, you feel like you've been punched in the face and the anaesthetic needs to work its way out of your system. Beyond that, it's more to do with appearance - I had a couple of corking black eyes and a beak, so I didn't particularly want to be out and about (but I felt OK).

Sawyer64 · 26/05/2010 00:24

Not sure but if memory serves me correct...(I was a Theatre Nurse for 15 yrs prior to 2000,bit rusty now!)
Sometimes they pack the nose with gauze, and silicone splints so you would need to return to OPD after a few days to have packs out. They also used to put Plaster of Paris Splint across the forehead and down the nose,so most patients don't want to be seen like this.
Lastly you can look a little bruised under the eyes,so again some patients wouldn't return to work with these.

This may be a little dated info now though.

TheNextMrsDepp · 26/05/2010 00:40

Sawyer64 - that sounds exactly what it was like for me.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 26/05/2010 07:36

I checked with DH, he had his turbinates done and a bit shaved off his septum, so nothing like what you described. Sorry.

sockonmyhead - have you had this done yet? I'm also getting this done soon and was wondering how it was for you...

sockonmyhead · 06/06/2010 13:23

Hi socksonmyhead i had this on Tues and am still recovering - I've got two black eyes and a splint over my nose, also a very sore throat! how about you are you doing ok?

sockonmyhead · 13/06/2010 14:27

hello, thankfully no black eyes but other wise not great! My nose wouldn't stop bleeding down my throat post op and a ending up vomiting loads of blood and passing out. I came home thursday afternoon and have been to the gp three times since and back to ent in the middle of the night on friday. I think that maybe I don't get on well with general anasthetics! I know that is spelt wronly, but my fuzzy head can't work out the right way!!!
