Acne: Zineryt?

June2009 · 20/05/2010 14:48

Heya,

I used to take "Yasmin" to treat my acne and doubled up as contraceptive) and I was very happy with the results, completely clear skin.
Since my pregnancy/birth however the gp is reluctant to give it to me as I put on too much weight. (higher risk of thrombosis).

I get nasty acne on my jaw everytime I'm on my periods

So the gp has given me a mini pill (femulen) and prescribed "zimeryt" for this acne, he said I should use it for a month before it is fully effective.

Has anyone used this before? I read a few mixed reviews...
I've just applied it for the first time and it's not made my face red or sting so far.

Yes, I used it when I stopped being on the Dianette pill.

It did help a bit, but was no where near as effective as the pill. I also found that it could be quite drying on the skin and made my chin a bit flaky from time to time.

Agree that it can take a while to have any effect - am still looking for a treatment that was as effective as the pill, but I think that as the spots are hormone related, it is only going to be a hormone treatment that properly clears them up.

I have discovered that since having my 2nd dc and losing a bit of weight, my skin is the best it has ever been, but still prone to break outs.

June2009 · 20/05/2010 15:26

ah ok thanks, so...
ditch the pill and try for number 2 ;)

I think my skin was a lot better pre-pregnancy when I was not overweight, I did not have any breakouts then (on Yasmin).
I've started exercising again recently but I'm 3 stones overweight right now so it's going to take some time. I just can't be fat and have spots, that's going to make me depressed.

Can you not take dianette again?
I had been on dianette for 7 years before being put on yasmin. I realise now that dianette was making me very moody and borderline depressed compared to Yasmin and Femulen.

I could take the pill again but just feel like I've been on it long enough and want to be hormone free now my family is complete

Know exactly how you feel though - it just gets you down and knocks your confidence so much.

Have you tried keeping a food diary too? I know friends who swear that after a couple of weeks wheat or dairy free they can see an improvement? Worth a try. Good luck with it.

Hullygully · 20/05/2010 15:56

V V good.

Species8472 · 20/05/2010 17:39

I used Zineryt a few years ago and found it very good at preventing the horrible lumpy spots I got on my chin and jawline. I would defintely recommend that you give it a go.

June2009 · 20/05/2010 17:53

hey detox thanks, really good advice.
I used to keep a food & exercise diary too, I'm going to start that again tonight!

It's a good excuse to cut dairy and wheat really isn't it. I didn't use to have these either pre-baby when I was watching my diet.

I know what you mean about being hormone free, I stopped taking my pill when I caught a D&V bug, then forgot to take it on holiday with me and not taking it was really liberating!

I've started the treatment so fingers crossed if I can do all this it'll go away and then I can go back on Yasmin when I've lost all that weight.

I tried Zineryt years ago (teenage years). It didn't really do much for me but then nor did Yasmin or Dianette so I'm probably not your best comparison point.

The thing I find has helped most is Benzoyl Peroxide cream (Duac).

still looking for the magic cure though if anyone has any ideas...!

Oh I was going to recommend Duac too- excellent stuff, best I've tried.

champagnesupernova · 20/05/2010 18:31

yy to flakes but properly used to zap those zits.

ihearthuckabees · 20/05/2010 18:42

I second what minipie says. Check out acne.org for a very simple regime that WORKS. Basically, gently moisturising, benzoyl peroxide (I use 5% and get it from amazon), no picking/sqeezing and gentle moisturiser, although I don't need this much as I use the oil cleansing technique to cleanse, and I don't get dry flaky bits of skin any more.

I had very stubborn acne, and had had it for 35 years in varying degrees, and my skin is much better than it's ever been. I too had the hard lumps on my chin that are supposed to be hormone related - they were horrible, unsightly, and painful. They are now gone. I still get a few pimples and blackheads, but I can live with that.

I had tried all the other treatments before, including pill, except for roaccutane, which sounded too scary for me.

June2009 · 20/05/2010 19:26

oh noooooo, just checking acne.org and the list of stuff to avoid and sounds like sushi & soy sauce is a no-no...what am I going to eat?? We have it like twice a week and I love it!! That could explain why it is particularly bad this month though...

OP posts:
ihearthuckabees · 20/05/2010 19:33

June - I ignore all the stuff to do with diet. Just follow the cleansing regime and you will see improvement regardless of whether you are eating the right thing. Then you can decide if you want to try to improve it even more with better diet.

(Confused as to why sushi would cause acne???)

seashore · 20/05/2010 19:41

I used it years ago and it worked very well for me, over long term any of these things can be skin thinning, but it will get you by a bad patch.

June2009 · 20/05/2010 19:45

iheart something to do with iodine/kelp/seaweed. I have to watch my diet to loose weight anyway so I don't mind but I'd find it hard to give up sushi.

For those who have used Zynerit, this might be a stupid question but the gp and chemist said to use it everyday twice a day:
Do you still use it when the spots are gone? From experience I pretty much only get spots just before and during my periods.

Thanks for all your info, feel free to add any other tips!

OP posts:
minipie · 20/05/2010 19:55

Iheart - bit of a hijack here, but please talk to me about oil cleansing?

I wonder if it might help me - I find my skin gets worse when it gets a bit dry (this may be because I pick more then, though )

ihearthuckabees · 21/05/2010 14:15

Hi minipie

There is a website that explains it all

www.theoilcleansingmethod.com.

Don't be intimidated by it - the basic principle is to clean your skin by massaging oil into, then steaming it off with a hot flannel. There are lots of subtle combinations of oils you can use depending on your skin type/oiliness, but to be honest, I now just use a bit of whatever vegetable oil I have lying around, and it still seems to work (now that I've got the acne under control with the panoxyl cream).

It seems counterintuitive to rub oil into acne prone skin, but I had got to the stage where my skin was both spotty and dry in different places, and it has totally sorted out the dryness. It is also cheap and easy, plus you can use the oil to take of your eye makeup too, so that's an added bones. Like I say, I think the acne has been sorted by the benzoyl peroxide treatment, but the oil cleansing has improved the condition of my skin overall.

There have been massive threads here on the oil cleansing that you may be able to track down.

minipie · 21/05/2010 14:24

cheers! will take a look

did you say vegetable oil?

Species8472 · 21/05/2010 16:22

June2009 I uswed to use Zineryt all the time, to control the spots, even if I didn't actually have any at the time. I think it works well to prevent the spots occuring in the first place.

June2009 · 21/05/2010 18:00

thanks species. I started using it yesterday and already it looks less inflamed overall.
At the moment I have not had to pay for it because I still have the maternity exemption, do you know how much it costs usually?

OP posts:
seashore · 21/05/2010 23:24

I wouldn't get too dependant on it, if you can get by without it, do anything like that is very strong and hard on your skin.

I used it for about 5/6 months, I had been going through some tough times which might have showed on my skin. So once everything had settled down and the zineryt had got things under control I stopped using it and my skin was fine, sure a few spots, always before my period but nothing too bad.

Really it was just one mega spot that sent me to the gp! Some spots are like that!

ihearthuckabees · 24/05/2010 10:59

Yes, minipie, vegetable oil (sunflower, olive, etc) from the supermarket.

Also, just re-read my post and it should read bonus, not bones!. LOL.
