Bleeding 3 weeks out of 4 - any advice?

Since having 4 year old ds,my periods have been out of control. I went to the GP in desperation when I got to the stage where I was having a period every 14 days, and bleeding heavily for 8 of those days.

GP suggested Mirena, mini pill or Depovera. She is very keen on the Mirena, I wasn't after reading some stuff on here.

Tried mini pill but bled pretty much all the time.

Went back on Depovera, which suited me before having ds (no periods at all, was great) but am on my second injection now and bleeding is getting me down. Last Thursday, I stopped bleeding after 3 weeks, and now today I have begun bleeding again. I cannot face the thought of another 3 week bleed. I am meant to be going on holiday at half term but I know I will still be bleeding then and all the way through. I am sick of it - me and dh have no sex life to speak of because of it.

I have an appointment with the GP this morning - I know she will suggest Mirena, but I can't see what difference it will make, and assume it would be hard to convince them to remove it if it just made me continue bleeding.

Anyone with any experience who could advise, please?

Bleeding like this is probably not menstrual bleeding in the usual sense. Its not normal and you should not have to put up with it.

Insist to your GP that you are referred to a gynaecologist as a matter of course. Its no point in just solely trying to treat the symptoms and push a Mirena on you (something that may not be either desireable or even suitable for you to have and again does not address the CAUSE). The cause of your bleeding needs to be established and such problems are outside a GPs remit of understanding.

This is dominating your life now and the GP should be on board and referring you on. If GP is unhelpful see another GP in the practice and longer term change GP practices.

BTW fibroids can cause heavy and prolonged bleeding, a gynae would be able to check for such problems.

I had had heavier periods post children (now 22 & 18), but a year ago I had the period from hell and on a Saturday I bled so heavily that I missed a party and spent the evening up and down to the bathroom with totally out of control bleeding.
Saw GP as I was soon off to Rome for 4 days and absolutely did not want any period at all whilst there. I was prescribed some medication to stop period that I had to start taking a few days before Rome and it worked.
Just after this I saw a gynae consultant who was brilliant and she said that no one has to put up with bleeding like this. I went for a scan (few fibroids) and had a Mirena coil fitted.
After very light bleeding for the first 6 weeks I have never looked back and my periods are hardly anything now. It has been great.
I have other friends and relatives who have gone down the same road after similar problems and swear by the Mirena.

A D&C for fibroids and a Mirena coil fitted at the same time did the trick for me.

Thanks for the help all.

GP brought 3rd Depo injection forward to 9 wks and gave it today, but says if I still bleed we will try something else.

If it doesn't, am still not sure whether to insist on a gynae appointment or accept Mirena trial.
