Hospital referal for dental problem

Hello, I'm feeling a bit worried at the moment and wondered if anyone has any knowledge of dental problems. I have been really unlucky with my teeth recently and have not long ago had root canal done on a lower molar.
Anyway went today for a check up as I have a cracked upper molar that I knew needed attention. The dentist x rayed and said was not happy with what they saw so had to go to another room for a big xray which revolved around my head.. She can see a large dark area above the tooth I thought was cracked and said it may be a cyst or infection. Anyway she did not want to go near it and has refered my to the local NHS hospital to be seen. She was elusive and I feel scared now. Can anyone shed any light thi please?

It could be an apesectomy (sp?). They have to refer you to hospital because it involves cutting your gum to get the infection out. I don't think it is particularly nice but not something to be scared about.

I think if she is not a dental surgeon she won't be qualified to do the op and she may have been elusive because she doesn't know much about the procedure?

I got referred for one, doctor couldn't make up his mind so dentist said leave it for now - 5 years later and it seems fine.

I am sure you will be fine.

Thank you PM. I am so afraid of dental procedures. Initially I am going for a consultation and more x rays. I don't know how long an urgent dental referal takes but it scared me as I only went along for a check up with a slightly sore cracked tooth, didn't expect this!

Whatever happens you will be well anaesthetised and it will be worth it because if you have a pocket of infection it can flare up anytime and believe me tooth abcesses are horrendous.
