God no no, Meant anti inflammatory stuff. Sorry! That was misleading. Point is, for a fit guy to take himself to the GP for arm pain, it must have really hurt.

Just looking back at DH's time line, from GPs appointment to being seen by consultant at hospital was about 6 weeks. As soon as the consultant saw him, he knew at once it was serious and then he was biopsied at once. Then they rang pretty swiftly and asked him to come in for the results. DH knew then it was bad news as they had said they would write with the results. (He said as soon as you get the 'see me' phone call, you know it's curtains!)

No4, it sounds as though your doc is doing things exactly right. An x ray is a good first step at this stage, before you know if the mole is indeed melanoma.
If it is, and you have confirmation of that, then will be the time to insist on further tests such as the node biopsy.

Merrylegs, how often is your DH on follow ups? was it a while ago he had the lymph dissection? (when they remove the nodes from a particular area)

I presume he has been taught what to look out for, any aching or swelling basically anywhere but especially in the scar tissue and around where things were removed. If he finds any new lumps, new things on the skin or has any pain for more than a few days, he shouldn't wait for the appointment but should go in straight away.

I would think given the fact they said it was quite a bad primary (the initial mole or lesion is called the primary) that is'a a bit odd they've not suggested anything systemic. Adjuvant therapy means something alongside the surgery to try and reduce the chances of it coming back/recurring.

That can mean radiation treatment, chemo or something else. If it does come back they will talk to you about clinical trials. These are currently the best bet for more advanced melanoma - they include immunotherapy drugs, vaccine trials, that kind of thing. There are various options.

The really important thing is to be aware of any changes in his health and get onto it asap. The rest is down to luck; people can live 20 years and more without a recurrence, or it can be very aggressive. It depends on your genetics and stuff like that.

Wishing everyone on the thread the very best outcome.

ConDemNation. Just saw you on Rindercella's thread - sorry I banged on about my misdiagnosis story but it does worry me! And I wanted to say thank you - your information has been very helpful. DH's treatment so far has been of the rather brutal hack it all out variety. He has a follow up on June 14th and I am absolutely going to make sure he lists every little ache and pain to the consultant. He has back pain at the moment and while that is so common and easily dismissed, suddenly everything becomes more sinister when you have had a really bad scare, so he will be taking your advice and leaving no twinge unturned during his consultation!

ConDemNation · 23/05/2010 06:38

Merry it must be so frightening for you both at the moment. The person I mentioned on Rinders' thread was my closest friend, and her illness was also melanoma.
It was treated as a fungal infection, dermatitis, you name it, and only once it had spread to her neck did the doctors actually sit up and get a bit scared.

I really, really hope your husband has been treated early enough and thoroughly enough for it not to have gone anywhere else.

However, if it has - and that's a real if, because there are many. many reasons for back pain! - they do have some very good new drugs that it's possible he would have access to.

The most significant ones are gene targetted and that would mean testing for a genetic mutation called BRAF. There are other mutations too. The testing is easy, and if he has this mutation the drugs should work very well, at least for the short term. I will try and tell you more if and when he needs this info.

There are other trials of drugs such as ipilimumab, avastin, and also vaccine trials where they give the person a vaccine against their own cancer cells...this can be very effective. And something called IL-2 as well, which is harsh but can actually work.

It's pot luck as to what works on who, but people survive advanced melanoma for 20 years or more, just depending on what works for them and how it is managed. We were very unlucky, but your DH could well be one of the lucky ones!

That's what I am trying to say. You sound positive and you are within your rights to stay that way, at least for the time being! Keep it up, and yes, it's important to mention anything like back pain etc.

Let us know how you go...sorry, just realised this is a hijack (had forgotten whose thread it was!) but will post this anyway in case it helps.

Numberfour, how are you doing? I hope things are alright and you are feeling OK.

Numberfour · 27/05/2010 07:32

Waiting for results appointments is really hard, I know.

Hoping it all goes well for you.

Numberfour · 27/05/2010 18:58

Merry, I do hope that things go well and that your DH's next check up is a good one. And that, as you say, every twinge is taken note of.

The dermatologist told me today that it was highly unlikely that my mole was melanoma. She was so kind and decent about the whole thing and even arranged for me to go back at lunch time for her to remove it for me. It was a million times less painful than I thought it would be.

The dermatologist said that she would ring me with the results and that I should not get a fright when I hear her voice! She really was so personable and lovely.

Of course I feel a bit silly about having been so scared, especially when other people are have real problems.

ANYONE would have been as scared!

Glad it went so well.

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 27/05/2010 19:46

Hi Numberfour, sorry I wasn't about earlier on - (it's cdn)

Phew! Sounds as though your derm was lovely I am so pleased that she doesn't think it was melanoma.

Hope you manage to relax a bit now!

Best wishes x
