Discoloured front tooth - 3 year old daughter

DD (3) fell down some stairs last week and bruised her face and had a bleeding mouth. We couldn't see anything wrong with her teeth but now approx 10 days later one of her bottom teeth is a partly grey / brown coloured. Am now paranoid that she'll have to have it out. Have got dentist appt for 3 weeks time! They won't see her earlier unless she's in pain (she's not).

I have a discoloured permanant front tooth from an accident. It is dead but doesn't have to come out and isn't painful or loose. It was really bad when it happened (went almost black) but it lightened and is fairly unnoticable now.

My ds has a discoloured front baby tooth. The dentist said he must have knocked it at some point. He said it will have absolutely no effect on the grown up tooth underneath. Weirdly, it has got less grey recently. I read on the internet that this sometimes happens as it's like a bruise that then heals a bit.

I've just been googling it (as you do) and it seems that the idea is that they will heal overtime or remain in place and not cause any harm.

I had this when I was a child - the root had died. It wasn't taken out until my adult tooth started growing in behind it. (in my case the tooth wasn't going to come out by itself)

Am dentist on maternity leave. The tooth has died and discoloured like a bruise. It can stay where it is unless it gets infected (swollen gum or white spot on gum). There is a chance of damage to adult tooth below but you can't do anything about that or see if it has until it comes through so no point worrying about it. Hope this helps.

Thanks archieballerina, that has really put my mind at rest.

I'll keep an eye out for an infection and will stop worrying!

hi Lotkin this happened to my DD too, she was 18 mo when she fell and the tooth only slightly changed colour.
however just before her 3rd birthday an abcess had developed and she needed it removed in hospital under GA.

please dont worry about the tooth; my DD looked even cuter with her missing one. she will be 6yo this week and we are still waiting for the adult tooth to appear

ds had a fall and the tooth started to go grey as well. the dentist said that the discolouration is a bruise that shines through but not necessarily a dead tooth. nothing can be done except taking it out if it gets infected ... dentist said not to worry, many many kids have it...
