Rectocele misery - warning TMI

Am seriously considering an op to correct my rectocele. Have had it for about 8 years but in the last few months it has got worse

I have read the rectocle repair thread and it does help to know that I am not alone - this isn't something I can talk to anyone in real life about and really it is getting me down....

Wondered if anyone minded sharing their rectocele symptoms? I am trying to work out what is normal and what not as I am also on anti d's for anxiety at mo.
So here goes
Can start a poo but struggle to finish - have to press on perineum and even then feel something is left behind - and a further trip to the toilet later confirms this...
Horrible bulge in m fanjo - have tried "splinting " but doesn't seem to work

My life at mo revolves around thinking about the next poo - not how I wanted to spend my middle youth...

I am so sad about it .

I had this op in May and I'm due to return to work next week. I'd been having problems over the years but had adjusted to them.

Also its difficult telling people - what do you say?! I'd half thought of saying I was having a knee op! But I've found that since I've been telling friends about it, several have told me they are having similar problems too.

In terms of recovery,I had 2 days in hospital and it was 3-4 weeks before my energy started to return.

Think the worst thing is that you can get a recurrence, don't know if I would want this done again..

I'm hoping that someone will be able to offer reassurance / advice on this!

I have just returned from Gyne outpatients appointment where this was diagnosed and I was offered surgery. I am just a bit worried about any post surgery complications / problems that I didn't think to ask about.

My gynecologist advised that intercourse maybe very painful after wards, and not just in the short term . Also that having bowel movements may be painful. Does anyone else have experience of this or is he painting the worst scenario?

I've noticed that lifting and driving are not recommended for several weeks, but does anyone know how long I should wait to go back to the gym or even go for a walk??

Thanks

Gracelady, I hope that you are feeling better. I spoke to a woman who had a rectal prolapse repair and it is tough going, more so than a vaginal prolapse repair (she had that too) She is great now, back to normal after 14 years of suffering. So hang in there. Anyway I did speak to a consultant and it appears that I have a rectal prolapse too. I will have to have it sorted before I can get my rectocele repaired. Its fairly bad and unusual in a woman my age, just gone forty. I don't know who will mind my young children for all these surgeries but anyway at least someone believes me now. Thank you. Look after yourself.

Hi everyone - started this thread and then failed to come back to it what with embarrasing tests (defecating protogram -an xray while you poo ! ) and various unpleasant internals.

Anyway I do not just have a rectocele , I have an enterocele as well (small bowel pressing down) , so am off to discuss a laproscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (what a mouthful) prob in September. Like you changed2 I am just past 40 and really can't believe it is happening to me at this relatively young age, but on the other hand I too am glad that I have an answer and a possible solution to my bowel probs!

Good luck to everyone on this thread - I hope you get the help you need and deserve. Will post again when have seen my colorectal guy!

Tx

Hi Girls, I had my rectoele & enterocele - (Tenacles were used during enterocele to lift small intestine off of my colon) As u've probably read I had a huge hernia. I was told during one office visit that the hernia covered my whole perineal area! As u probably read I believe I had the hernia farther back than 30 yrs.'s when I quit pooing w/o I took a laxtive and the pressure in my abdomen was undescribalbe. I had a hysterectomy. I kind of talked by Dr. into that b/c I was clueless on what the problem was and of course it didn't help. Sometimes it hard to find the hernia. Read my other threads for further info. about this. My surgery was scheduled for more than 2 months away. I was flat of my back w/ bladder infection and what was probably almost prolaspe. I could feel something pinching or tearing. I was flat of back. My Dr. was on vacation and then had to get caught up. I was in for bladder infection and told the staff Lord willing I will have surgery on June 22. They gave me "the look". I did have surgery on that date and don't regret it. I have taken notes from all of your threads and will answer your question's as best as I can from the beganning until the present.

Back again....I would say the worst part of the hernia was the pressure on my other organs, especially my bladder as I would be embrassed b/c I would have to urinate so often even during the night. Since 1995 I had so much pressure in my lower & upper abdomen I couldn't sleep. That's when I starting having to push, drive or whatever else it would take to work my job. I had pain only on one side at the time. Few yrs. later I had pressure and pain on the other side of abdomen, various test etc. didn't show the hernia. Colonoscopy at an early age and various other test. I would only recommend going to your GYN. I did that too, but no doctor that I ever recall would ask me to take 2 breathes and bare down as if I were having a baby until recently so that they could see the thing! I got so bad that I felt like I had heavy water baloons under my bottom area. U see I think that over the yrs. the walls of my abdomen kept tearing and therefore causing the other problems. I feel like each one of u r so blessed just to know what the problem is. I would have had the rectocele in a New York minute if I'd know what the problem was! Endless nights, fatigue, pain, pressure and toxic build up's from not having proper b.m. I faced times when mental clarity was so hard to come by. I know there's different degrees to every situation. Maybe u don't have the difficulties that I had, but who want's to chance it if they know what the problem they r facing is. I would just do it and get it over w/ b/f u may have other health complications that r not even connected w/ this problem.

nikki66 · 27/07/2017 15:52

thats exactly what I am experiencing, doctor confirmed what she thought today of a moderate cystocele and rectocele. Its nice reading others that have the same thing, you start to feel weird.

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 27/07/2017 15:59

Nikki, there's a current support thread in General Health, this one's older than my (repaired last year) rectocele!! Grin

Ell75 · 28/09/2017 20:13

Thankyou, I've just had proctogram and I am grateful for your comments ☺️

Star141 · 28/09/2017 20:44

I have a what I think is a cystocele. Vaginal wall is visible a small amount of if I squatted over a mirror Blush doesn't come out but just there. Like a small lump. I've been told this is normal for most women after childbirth but I'm not sure if this is just a fob off. I do sometimes get symptoms I would like another baby but so scared it will worsen aswell I don't know whether to stick to one DC.
Is this what you ladies experienced or would you say that it's much more severe to be having surgery? Can't believe there isn't more help for things like this. Flowers for you all.
