DD (5 montsh old) has had a weepy left eye since birth and has one episode of it getting gungy which was treated with somehting from the doctor. These last few dasy it's been weeping again but I put it down to her having a cough and cold. This morning though she woke up and could hardly open her eye it was so gungy, yellowy and quite thick, stuck to her eye lashes as well. She had more after her lunchtime sleep too. I've got some drops now from the chemist but I'm a bit concerned about the fact that the area around her eye is very red, the skin underneath for example and to the side is very red and a bit inflamed I think.

Typically i can't get a doctors appt until tuesday. Any ideas if the redness and slight inflamation might mean that it's something else?

TIA

Oh good, glad you managed to get something that is working.

Well after us thinking that theeye infection had cleared up, DD woke up this morning and her eye was covered in gunge again and all closed up! It's not swollen and red like before but it's still not right. DH also now has one red itchy eye. We're still giving the drops and also wiping her eye with cold tea. Does anyone have any other suggestions please?
Should I take her back to the doctors again again?

Is she still taking the oral antibiotics? And which drops did the second doctor give you?

mckenzie · 11/08/2005 20:32

yes, still taking the oral medicine. This second lot of drops are Chloramphenicol.

I'm not sure...sometimes it does take a while to clear up IME, but I've only ever had drops prescribed, not oral antibiotics as well. Will your doctors give advice over the phone?

Suggest your dh starts to use the drops you bought from the pharmacist asap. Did you get brolene? That's pretty effective IME, I only said not to use them for your dd cos your she is so young and because of the swelling.

oh i'm sad to hear this hasn't cleared up yet. btw, as you mention cold tea, my mum always swore by cold camomile tea to wash the eye with.

I really dont know what's going on now.

This morning it was yukky and gungy when she woke up but still DD wasn't bothered by it at all and all day long there has been just the slightest bit of doscharge. DH's eye is very red and not fully open but he has no discharge at all.

I'm going to visit our local chemist tomorrow (he has filled both the prescriptions so knows what we've had so far) to ask for his advice for DD and DH. If DD's hasn't gone completely by monday then I found out today about a fairly local hospital that has an eye casualty dept and I'll take her there.

Still doing the cold tea and I've got some camomile now LilacLotus so will try that tomorrow.
