Effective perfume free head lice treatments?

I am allergic to perfume. I've treated my son with a normal treatment twice before today. I've just used it for the third time on him and I'm really suffering now. The perfume is listed as "perfume HT52" and a quick google seems to show it's in quite a few OTC headlice treatments.

I obviously can't use it again and (shame on me) don't trust DH to do a proper treatment.

Does any body know if there are there any perfume-free chemical options? I will, of course, get my friendly neighbourhood pharmacist on the case too.

Which "alternative" treatments work?

YOu cannot beat tea tree conditioner on dry hair. Lots of it and then comb comb comb.

When my DCs have had them previously I have never used the shampoos because they are so damn expensive.

Vodka!

TheGoldenRosette · 20/05/2010 21:38

That was a bad plan. Hic.

what about just combing through with a nit comb and conditioner?

TheGoldenRosette · 20/05/2010 22:31

I do that but I was advised by the school nurse to use a treatment when I found live ones. I've now talked to some other parents and they seem to just do the conditioner more often than weekly when the live ones appear.

If there's live ones then nit comb daily with a Nitty Gritty comb until there are no live ones then every 3-4 days for the next 3 weeks to make sure you've got all the eggs and larvae. It's labour intensive but does completely get rid of the buggers without all those horrible chemicals.

TheGoldenRosette · 20/05/2010 22:47

Yep, that's pretty much the advice I've had now, once I recovered from trying SDD's vodka advice.

I'd been nittygritty-ing once a week but it fell away a bit due to (genuine) problem so I went in with the napalm.

My sister is a health visitor and she always recommends Olihans's approach.

Once you have got rid of the little bleeders(using the combing and conditioner method above) I would recommend spraying daily with water with a couple of drops of tea tree oil and lavender essential oil in it.

I have been doing this for 6 months and we haven't had any nits since.

Bug busting is best! The little plastic comb and conditioner always works-- the most it has taken me to clear them is 2 weeks. The comb lifts out any live lice; you repeat it every 3 days to catch the nits as they hatch.
Bingo!
Plus the lice hate well conditioned hair as they can't get the eggs to stick.......
