Tooth ache, dentist phobia, please help?

A few weeks ago half of my tooth fell out , after it fell out there was no pain (if anything it felt better), i was hoping the other half would follow so i wouldn't have to have it removed but its not budging. Anyway in the past few days it has got really painful, i am taking lots of pain killers which has helped a little but when i eat its really painful.

I am so scared of the dentist that i would rather go through the pain of child birth than sit in the chair, the thought of going fills me with fear and makes me feel sick.

I wish i could bring myself to go but i can't.

How bad is the pain going to get?

Will it ease off?

How can i get over my fear?

Go and find a dentist that specialises in nervous patients, you can have sedation maybe. You will get to the point where you have no choice but to get it sorted...best do it sooner rather than later.

Thanks scurry, i see a NHS dentist as i get free treatment, my dentist is really rough , i wish i could afford to go private or have a GA so i didn't know what was going on.

I can handle pain and i can handle injections (just about) but i hate the pulling and having my mouth poked around with, i also hate the feeling after when my mouth comes around from the injections .

My teeth are quite bad, i have 2 teeth that have half fallen out (both are painful), i had a lot of work done on them when i was in my teens which is why i hate going.

I would happily have them all out under GA rather than having fillings and crowns.

Sorry but the pain is not going to get better on its own - you do need to see a dentist. Mine does hypnotherapy for nervous patients, there are lots around that are good about helping nervous people feel ok about it.

Do look round for other NHS dentists in your area (though I know that can be tricky in some places). They don't have to be rough and unpleasant to you!

Sounds like you definitely need a better dentist - and soon.

I'm extremely nervous and have had a couple of crowns done under sedation. I really recommend it, as it's all very straightforward and doesn't leave you feeling ill afterwards.

Ask around and Google, and hopefully you'll find a dentist who can help you.

Good luck

Thank you, we are off on holiday tomorrow so i'm going to drug myself up with pain killers until i get home, then i will find a dentist and try to be brave .

I'm still in a lot of pain today but its just in one tooth (rather than the whole side of my face).

I have had two teeth out and after the injection i didnt feel a thing....local anaesthetics are amazing. I am very nervous too and hate going, but honestly once the local was in it was really ok.
good luck...be brave, be strong !!!!

Another recommendation for sedation here. I had an impacted wisdom tooth out with a local anaesthetic and sedation after my dentist said it would be 'pretty unpleasant' with just a local but the alternative was having a GA in hospital and them taking all 4 out (policy apparently).

I was in the chair for almost an hour but it honestly felt like it took 5 minutes and I just couldn't remember anything about it afterwards - fanstastic.
