Coronary Stenting - warfarin afterwards?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 09/05/2010 20:27

My Dad has recently been diagnose with angina and he is going to have an angiogram in a fortnight. It sounds like he might need a stent put in.

Does anybody know if this would require him to be warfarinised afterwards?

He's having trouble coming to terms with having angina and this would be a big thing for him to get his head around.

My dad went on Warfarin after angio.

He's had a triple bypass, too.

Did he have a stent during his Angio expat?

Hope his surgery went well.

yes, he had the stent during hte angio.

and he was awake for it!

he also had a full prostatectomy under epidural anaesthesia.

it's less common in the US to use GA unless you absolutely have to.

particularly when you have an elderly patient with heart disease and hypertension.

It went fine!

He may not need the stent, depends what sort of repair/plasty he may need.

He will get very good drugs.

That's what he's struggling to come to terms with - having to take daily drugs.

Thanks for telling me about your Dad.

See, my dad looked at it as: taking a daily drug is better than the alternative!

Patients are normally given an anti-platelet drug such as Clopidogrel (plavix) or
prasugrel(Efient). These halep to reduce the risk of clots forming on the surface of the newly implanted stents, usually for 3 months to a year depending on the type of stent used.

Sorry - ds is helping type, and posted too early.
Warfarin would normally only be used if the patient had an irregular heart rhythym which hadn't responded to medication.
HTH, if you have any other questions, fire away!

Thanks for that.

Expat - that would be my take on things too, I've put it to him aswell. He knows it's not a sensible way of thinking, but is just where he's at atm.

stan I'm guessing that those are tablets and wouldn't require regular INR checks. Am I right? I think the tie of regular blood tests with warfarin would really drag him down which worries me. AFAIK he doesn't have any arrhythmias.
