constant thrush - could it be caused by condoms?

Irishchic · 07/05/2010 11:35

I am at the end of my tether. Getting thrush every month. Have now been referred to a specialist for it. Am wondering could it be brought on/exacerbated by condom use, as this is our current form of contraception...

Either that or could it be the panty liners that I wear during certain days of the month? Or tampons, could that be it??

Any feedback/advice would be appreciated.

have you treated your partner with diflucan as he can keep reinfecting you even though he is asymptomatic

mistressploppy · 07/05/2010 14:10

Thrush is a bugger, stays in your system so will recur unless you kill it off comprehensively. I sympathise as before having ds I got it every month too. I bet when my periods return I will again - boo

I saw a helpful doc at gum clinic who gave me some oral meds which did see it off for a year or two. Came back though

Try natural yog, cotton knicks/no knicks(!), maybe look at diet?

MoChan · 07/05/2010 14:24

I would absolutely look at your diet. If you can't defeat it, I would suggest that the problem is systemic, and therefore you need to attack the source... I had this, back it would come, every couple of weeks, month after month after month. It went on for a couple of years. Two months on 'anti-candida' diet, never had it since, that was about 12 years ago.

Tampons can dry the vagina making it more prone to thrush as the natural bacterial balance can be disturbed.

Panty liners an stop air circulating.

Changing your diet and keeping refined carbs and sugars to a minimum can help.

Also, avoid hot baths and take showers only for a while.

Hi i am seriously confused last week i had to go to a G.U clinic to have tests done and she done a routine preg test aswell it shown that it was positve, next day had emergency internal scanning but no sign of a baby and another negative result today and i have coil in place so has this happened to any1 b4 and what has happend??

purplepeony · 07/05/2010 17:05

confused- maybe you should re-post this under a new thread as it is getting lost in this thrush thread!

From what you say it soudns as if you might have had an early miscarriage after the 1st PG test.

Nikita

I experienced really annoying bouts of recurrent thrush a few years ago, and then realised that the source of the problem was the perineum area rather than vagina.
I started applying canestan liberally in that area, and it really seemed to do the trick.

But I would also second the cotton knickers, with no liners, and switching to pads from tampax.

rabbitstew · 07/05/2010 23:22

Well, I was very interested by one episode of Embarrassing Bodies, when a girl with over-sized labia was asked whether this was causing her to get recurrent thrush... I'd never heard of this as a possible cause before! I can see why it could cause a problem, though, as it would kind of seal off your oxygen supply down below if they got stuck together...

Irishchic · 08/05/2010 00:47

Thanks all. Will look at diet, as I eat way too much refined carbs and I love my sugar.

Also interesting about the perineum thing. I do also think I have the thrush in that area too, but for some reason never thought to apply the cream there.

Nikita, it is also a good idea not to wear too many layers too. Try to let the are breathe when ever possible.

differentnameforthis · 08/05/2010 07:13

Be aware of what you have in your bath too, some bath lotions can irritate too.

mumblecrumble · 08/05/2010 07:16

hello!!!

I was in a similar way.... (hter are posts like this that U started!!)

I was going mad.... until doctor diagnosed Vulval lichen sclerosus .... skin condition which dries the skin and agrevates thrush and other stuff like that.

I started using the cream... and never looked back. Not had thrush since.

Maybe be worth asking about this? I recomenede this to a few friends suffering and 1 of them had the same diagnosis..

Hello Nikita, I used to get thrush regularly but thankfully not any more. We changed to latex free condoms, I do not use any bubble bath or soap, also I stopped eating mushrooms. Hope you find an cure soon it's horrid.

differentnameforthis · 09/05/2010 09:31

Whatever you do, DO NOT put aloe vera down there when you have thrush! Very painful lesson learnt!

I have thrush, symptoms started last night, didn't have anything in. Was itchy as usual, so I had a rummage around in the cupboard & was convinced that Aloe vera would be OK, as it is a general cure all, put some on & went to bed.

Well...talk about on fire! Bloody painful...had to get up & wash it off!

Never again!

mumblecrumble · 09/05/2010 19:47

AYe, dont use vagisil either... stings like buggary.

differentnameforthis · 09/05/2010 23:34

mumble....vagisil didn't sting me, actually helped (but not completely)! Weird!

Stretch · 09/05/2010 23:37

Don't know if this will help, but my mum cut out unrefined sugar and all wine.

Thrush is so miserable.

mumblecrumble · 10/05/2010 23:24

DOn;t use honey either....

I am a sticky mess.
