How to have a successful GP appointment?

I've got a GP appointment in the morning to discuss an allergic reaction to celery which I had a couple of weeks ago, which involved my mouth and throat swelling.

I would really like a referral to an allergy clinic to discuss this further, but my GPs don't often refer to clinics, etc. I wondered whether there was anything I could do in order to get the referral?

Thanks!

why don't they offer referrals?

Demand one. It could be potentially very dangerous for you to have reactions where your throat and mouth swell.

They just don't refer very often - you have to push for them to prescribe anything as well, they seem really reluctant - they're kind of 'wait and see' doctors.

I used to have similar problems with my doctors. They didn't like prescribing anything, wouldn't do referals, had trouble diagnosing the simplest of conditions.
I changed surgeries.
I'd suggest you do the same if they do not give you a referal

Change surgery. The job of a GP is to help you access the drugs and services you need. If they don't do that change GP just like you would with any other good or service you buy.

Also, what I always do is go armed with the info you need to tell the GP what conditon you have and what drug/service you need. I find that if you go and tell the GP what you want they agree. If you go and ask them to tell you what you need they vacillate.

I think you need to ask them - that is definitely something you need to be referred for!

Definitely not successful. She told me to carry antihistammines and to avoid celery.

I am thinking of moving GPs.

Sorry, that was about my appointment this morning - obviously we are not the same person!

How did yours go?
