V heavy periods and monthly anaemia - normal?

Periods very heavy post dd - she is now 19mo. Last one and this one I've had headaches/pounding head and tiredness during my period, like anaemia. Is this normal and should I start taking iron regularly to combat it, or just eat liver/steak beforehand...? I will be making an apptmt with my doc but just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience.

No it is not normal.

I would make an appt with your GP asap with a view to getting a gynae referral. Heavy periods can sometimes be due to fibroids; it is certainly in your interests to find out what the underlying cause of this is as well as treating the symptoms. I suggest a gynae as well as these types of problems are often outside a GPs remit.

I had this after my 2 children. I was fobbed off with medication which, imho, didn't address the cause. I ended up having the coil, partly for contraception and partly to help with my hideous periods. The coil has certainly helped - hardly any bleeding at all now although I wish I had pushed to find out why things got so bad, rather than accepting my GP's comments that "it's just one of those things".

Good luck with the GP.

I was referred for an ultrasound which showed everything was fine. I have tablets to reduce the bleeding which have stopped the anaemia reoccuring. I did have the mirena coil for 2 years which did make a huge difference.

My family is complete and i'm going to ask for womb abalation (eek), my Mum had to have a hysterectomy for the same issues but fortunately there are much less drastic options available now.
