Have you ever taken those tablets to stop your period coming?

I am going away in July and the day I go is the day my period is due to start. I have horrendous periods and need to stop it happening.

Have any of you had those tablets that delay your period. I have had them once many years ago and vaguely remember feeling a bit shitty when I took them (bloated, migraines etc)....but this was quite some time ago so I may be imagining it!

I don't take the pill (due to migraines) so can't try the usual option of not having a break between packets.

Can anyone let me know if they have taken them and how they felt - did you get any symptoms at all?

Anything would be better than my period while I am away, but dont want to feel just as bad in another way!

I took them once.
Wouldn't do it again.
The symptoms multiplied every day that period was suppressed.
Moods were murderous.
Bloating was balloon-ous.
Then when it finally came.... fucking hell!!!

scratchmyback · 03/05/2010 20:44

Shit, so I didn't imagine the symptoms!

I seem to remember being really bloated. Oh god, what can I do. I can't have my period while I am away. I am so heavy and its agony (endometriosis).

i got them last year for going away, started taking them, period came anyway, waste of time, i have used them in the past before children and never had any problems

SendReceive · 03/05/2010 20:50

It's a contraceptive pill. If you've been on the pill before you should find it similar. I've done it lots in the past and been absolutely fine.

Goober · 03/05/2010 20:52

Can't you go on the pill?

DUSTIN · 03/05/2010 20:52

I used them a few years ago as period was due to arrive during my honeymoon. They worked really well and I felt fine. I just found it a pain trying to remember to take them.

SherbetDibDab · 03/05/2010 20:53

Do you just go to the gp and ask for them. I really want some but it feels such a frivilous reason to go to gp.

lou33 · 03/05/2010 20:58

i had it about 6 months ago

you take it a few days before you are due to start your period, for a max of 10 days iirc

it was fine

i just went to my gp and told them why i wanted to delay my period and they prescribed it

PortBlacksandVoter · 03/05/2010 21:07

They are called Noristhisterone. I've taken them loads and yes - you do feel a bit bloated / PMT as you are really extending that period. And THEY ARE NOT A CONTRACEPTIVE!!!!!

In the end i used to take them a cycle in advance so i felt shitty when i wasn't on hols. This only works if you are fairly regular though.

In the end i had the Mirena and i honestly haven't looked back...

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 03/05/2010 21:09

scratchmyback, could you take the tablet for the month before to change your cycle? That way if there were side effects they wouldn't happen while you are away

scratchmyback · 03/05/2010 21:10

That's a fantastic idea Port - I will go and get them for my June cycle and delay it a bit so that my July period (when I am holiday) doesn't come until I am back home!

I can't take the pill because I get lots of migraines from it.

scratchmyback · 03/05/2010 21:12

yes, thanks PantryBoy, just realised that I have got time to do that.

So, have I got this right? If say I take them in June and delay my period, my July period will still come 28 days (ish) after my last delayed period in June?

OP posts:
whingeomatic · 03/05/2010 21:12

I used them last year and was a total waste of time - period arrived a week later than normal, wasn't as heavy but lasted for 10 sodding days instead of the normal 4-5.

Clayre - i've also had them pre-children with no problems...

PortBlacksandVoter · 03/05/2010 21:18

I think you start taking them 5-7 days before you are due and then you start the day or two after stopping taking them - so you'd need to do some working out...

Hav eyou considered the Marina? I know it's not for everyone - the threads on here are testament to that. May be something to look into when you get back.

PortBlacksandVoter · 03/05/2010 21:19

And your next period should come at the normal time after you started the last time...

scratchmyback · 03/05/2010 21:24

I haven't really considered Marina - heard a lot of good things about it though. I think I have dismissed it because I dont need contraception (dp vasectomy) but I know I should really think about it now.

I have tried to stay off any kind of hormonal treatments for a while after years of surgery and hormone treatment for endo.

Noresthisterone is a contraceptive - it's a progesterone-only mini-pill - but you won't be protected if you only take it for a few days.

lou33 · 03/05/2010 21:34

i also was prescribed it because my periods got so bad i was bleeding through super plus tampons and pads within an hour, through clothes, onto the car seat etc

they gave me norethisterone which i had to take from day 19-26 of my cycle to see if it helped

it took quite a few months to make any difference, and by then i was lined up for surgery to rectify my periods

i too suffer from migraines when on the pill, and they dont recommend the mirena if you had that problem or if you suffer from depression, hence me not having that instead of surgery

scratchmyback · 03/05/2010 21:43

ok so sounds like mirena isnt an option for me then. My migraines on the pill were horrendous, used to get at least one every week.
