aluminium-free deodorants

outofpractice · 03/07/2003 14:48

Someone told me that the biggest source of aluminium intake in people avoiding aluminium saucepans (because of Alzheimer's link) is deodorants. I cannot find any in the shop which don't list an aluminium compound as an ingredient. Does anyone know how to find one?

OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Decleor do one but girl who sits opposite me at work tried it because she said that deoderant gives you cancer (Doh!! Deoderant give you non smelly pits!!!) and her boss had to tell her that she had BO!!!

Metrobaby · 03/07/2003 15:18

Lush do an excellent range that is aluminium free. Plus it will give you an excuse to buy their lovely bath bombs, bubble bar slices, creams etc etc. If you haven't got a store near you (which is a shame as the smells from them are heavenly), they have a website here . Don't be put off by the expense of the products as some of them last for ages.

morocco · 03/07/2003 17:25

boots do one called 'trust' but it's not like a standard deo - you put a bit on at night, wash it off the next morning and then it keeps you non-smelly for up to a week - no more applications needed. It's good though.
I also use 'sanex' because when I bought it abroad it didn't list alu as one of the ingredients - I think in the UK it is better labelled though and does in fact have aluminium in it.

pupuce · 03/07/2003 19:35

TomsOfMaine which Sainsbury's stock is alumnium free

sibble · 03/07/2003 20:02

Living nature do a great range of products without any "nasties". You do need to reapply during the day when hot to avoid the smellies though!!! tough call smelling or risking the cancer etc.

anais · 03/07/2003 20:42

Has anyone heard about those deodorant stone thingies? They're meant to be good. I've been looking and can't find them.

zebra · 03/07/2003 20:56

I've got one of the "stones" -- really just crystalised salt. I think I bought it in the USA, so no help there. And I have a stick of Tom's of Maine. The stone is better. Both kill bacteria rather than prevent you from sweating. Neither is immensely effective (for me).

Furball · 03/07/2003 21:22

Theres one here not quite sure why there isn't a womans one though. Theres also some link - You'll have to do a search for the deodorants. Haven't ever used any aluminium free so cant comment.

clucks · 03/07/2003 21:23

I have used those bauxite stones, but there is spray form made from that stuff called pit rok spray. Some chemists do sell it. They don't generally work unless you put them on straight after shower on soaped armpits, i.e. can't use them to freshen up in the day or evening. It has to be straight after soaping because they work by preventing bacterial growth.

Also, when you stop using normal anti-perspirants you do get a few weeks of increased sweating (coz your sweat pores suddenly feel free!) you just have to ride those few weeks through with washing them more often.

mammya · 03/07/2003 21:48

Anais do you mean pit rock? I find mine in health food shops. It's really good at stopping the smell but doesn't stop you sweating though. Trust works well too, although it doesn't last for one whole week in my case, more like 3-4 days.
I tthink the aluminium componetn in deodorant is waht acts as an antiperspirant. A friend of mine has recently had to stop using any deodorant at all as he stopped sweating and developed weird lumps under his arms, and the doctor told him it was because of the aluminium in the deo he was using.

anais · 03/07/2003 22:07

hmmm, mammya, that's very interesting. I've got lumps under my arms at various stages which by dr just said were cysts. I wonder if it could be to do with deodorant.

I will have a look at the various products mentioned. Thanks.

pupuce · 03/07/2003 22:25

I use Toms of Maine and no one has mentioned BO
DH uses the crystal and he smells nice

anais · 04/07/2003 11:28

Thinking again about the Trust thing (which I had never heard of before), can anyone tell me how it works, please? Is it an antiperspirant? Blocking the pores is the only way I can imagine it could work. Also, what happens if you wash???? I shower every day so surely it would wash off?

morocco · 04/07/2003 12:52

hi anais
I can't answer all the technical stuff but it's another 'bacteria eater' I think - anyway, not an antiperspirant. Don't worry, you can still wash every day! When I use it the effects seem to depend on how much I sweat - so in summer I need to renew it every couple of days but in winter it lasts a week before my pits start to get whiffy. My sister though who has really sweaty armpits ,poor thing, can only ever last a few days between applications.
I've also got cysts which is why I started using it in the first place although I can't really say it's made any difference. My sis has just had hers removed - I might get it done too next year.

zebra · 04/07/2003 13:29

The "crystal" is salt; salt kills germs. [Salt kills most things, actually]. That's how it works, by killing the little bacteria that make us smelly.

Enid · 04/07/2003 13:32

I use the toms of maine one and although its unperfumed I love the smell!! No one has mentioned me being smelly yet...dp doesnt use deoderant at all and he never smells

oliveoil · 04/07/2003 13:35

Why am I eating my lunch whilst reading about smelly armpits? (rushes off to find another thread)

Baba · 04/07/2003 19:41

Hi Outofpractice

Hate to mention it again but Forever Living Products do a Aloe Vera deodorant stick that is pure aloe vera and contains no aluminium salts.

Aluminium is banned in my european countries and it is only a matter of time before it is banned here. As you know, it does cause not only alzheimers disease but also breast cancer.

And not only that, but did you know that breast cancer is more common in the left breast because most people are right handed and we tend to spray more deodorant under the left armpit????

the deodorant is £4.56 and the website is under Forever Living Products.com if you want to have a look and lasts a lifetime!

My Mum had breast cancer at 25 and had a full mastectomy so I was very alarmed when I heard about aluminium salts. Obviously you all know that aluminium salts in a deodorant is when you spray it and it is all white on your black dress?

anais · 04/07/2003 21:46

Thanks everyone

outofpractice · 07/07/2003 13:23

Really useful information. No time yet to go shopping but will try them all in turn! Interesting what you say about the body adjusting - I am sure that the more deodorant you use, the more you require over time.

Baba, I'm sure you mean well, but you really must resist the temptation to advertise!

As for aluminium " causing" Alzheimer's and Cancer, well as outofpractice said at the beginning of the thread there is a link.If it were clear cut then aluminium saucepans and deodorants would be banned already.

Tissy · 07/07/2003 13:36

Have a look at this and also this

I found an aluminium free deodorant in superdrug today, called 'Bionsen'. It comes in roll on and pump spray. I don't know if its any good as I haven't yet tried it.
