Why do my mother's hands shake?

My mother is in her early 60s and seems fit and active. She has a strenuous job, walks regularly, uses the gym etc. She does have type 2 diabetes (as does my grandmother, in her 90s) which is diet controlled.

She came to stay recently and I was shocked at how much her hands shake. She poured DS a spoonful of calpol and her hands shook so much some of it spilled.

Any ideas?

Does she have a problem with anxiety?
I only ask as I get bad tremors in my hands and it's related to an anxiety/panic disorder. I can control it to a degree with betablockers.

Thanks all for the responses. I will definitely mention it to her, but first I will have to think of a very tactful and sensitive way to do it as she tends to get a bit ostrich-like about health issues.

I am particularly interested in the overactive thyroid suggestion, as it something I was treated for as a teenager. I wonder if that can be genetically linked, as with diabetes? Anxiety is also a possibility.
