Hole in tooth

I have a nice big hole in one of my molars. About 6 months back a dentist noticed it but I couldn't afford to have it fixed at the time, so went back a few weeks ago and they drilled out the opposite tooth and 'fixed' that one instead. I was just about to sign off of benefits and there is a two week (minimum) wait for a dentist.

Now I have a huge hole still that is a good few millimetres deep and quite wide in the first molar and cannot afford to have it filled, and I am going away for seasonal work on Tuesday.

How long do you think I can leave it before it becomes too bad? I'm hoping to be able to afford it by the end of June, though it may have to wait longer?

do you have a university where dentists train anywhere near you? Treatment there is usually free, and the students are well supervised and ime fantastically proficient

make sure you brush your teeth after every meal, use mouth wash and floss around it too, keep it ultra clean, and it shouldn't get much worse. dh has left a tooth broken for about 6 months before getting round to having it fixed. as long as it's not hurting, it'll be fine for a little while, june is only a few weeks away now.

gigglewitch: Unfortunately not here I don't think, but I'll look into unis in Kent as thats where I'm moving too.

lucykate: I shall try keep that in mind! I try brushing three times a day but usually only get around to doing it twice I am worried about it becoming broken as I don't want it taken out!

It's not hurting at all though, the only reason I noticed that it was there still was because a tooth pick went straight into it by accident. I wouldn't have noticed otherwise! Because I'd written down what side the dentist had told me there was a hole originally I realised that they'd done the wrong side. There must've been a hole on the other side but it wasn't as urgent as this one!

afaik there are dental hospitals (training students attached to university) in Manchester, Bristol, Liverpool, London (UCL) Newcastle, Glasgow, and possibly Sheffield[?unsure]
good luck

Darn it! Too far for me! though I will only be half hour from London so that's worth looking into.

Thank you!
