Bizarre link between periods and colds???? Can anyone help?

Woke up with another cold this morning, not bad just runny nose, sore throat and feel a bit sluggish
This is the 3rd cold ive had in 3 months.

So I looked back through my diary and every time Ive had a period, ive had a cold, either day before or day after.

Whats this all about? Anyone else had this? I think its a bit weird

Not weird at all. Apparently the immune system is often a bit suppressed at the time of your period. Can't remember why, but presumably hormonal!

mosschops30 · 29/04/2010 10:28

bump?????

mosschops30 · 29/04/2010 14:04

bump again?? Even an idea of what this oculd be would be nice

sorry rabbitt ive only just seen your post we must have x posts when I bumped the first time so I could only see my bump IYKWIM

I didnt know it supressed the immune system, is it worse do you think if periods are very heavy?
What could i take to stop this happening next month?

If your periods are very heavy, you could always check you aren't anaemic, as that wouldn't help! Other than that, I guess if you believe in that sort of thing, you could try Evening Primrose oil, which is supposed to help with hormonal balance, and the usual immune-system boosting remedies - plenty of rest, plenty of fluids, lots of hand washing, a healthy diet and moderate exercise, maybe extra vitamin C during your period, etc, etc. I always try to avoid getting too many late nights when my period is due, as I tend to succumb to my ds's colds when I've got my period, having fought them off all month before that.

inthesticks · 29/04/2010 17:39

I am almost menopausal so many years experience of this.
I've always believed my immunity was low during a period because I so often picked up colds when in contact with them at that time. The children could have colds at any other time and I would be fine no matter how snotty the noses.
Two weeks ago I had a period and DS2 was full of cold, hey presto 3 days later I have it.

mosschops30 · 29/04/2010 19:11

wow really?? NOt just me then?

Ive never experienced this before, although I had a mirena for 4 years so maybe that made a difference.
Its just so close everytime, last two months has been the day before and this month was the day I started

I get this virtually every month - no idea why though! I'm a vegetarian who has heavy periods though, so I guess that perhaps anaemia may have something to do with it, as Rabbit suggests.

mosschops30 · 29/04/2010 19:17

I dont think anaemia has anything to do with it, nothing to do with the immune system and Ive been anaemic for years, it barely gets above 10.

Really interested to see this post as I've been convinced of this too as every time I've had a cold or got ill it's always started at the same time as my period...weird. I always thought it was me and my DH thought I was nuts.

So no answers but I always suspected something to do with hormones supressing immune system around ovulation time.

bacon · 29/04/2010 22:46

Are you sure its a cold? 3 colds in 3 months - I'm not sure. Could be rhinitus due to the hormones. Similar to pregnancy rhinitus when some of us couldnt breath for 9 months!.

The hormones make the blood vessels swell in your nose and this then makes you feel rubbish.

Try oral decongestants or a good nasal spray. If this works then I'd assume its that.

I am sure a normal healthy person wouldnt have a cold every month.

bentneckwine1 · 30/04/2010 00:18

I always need to use my inhaler much more often when I have my period. The asthma nurse told me that there is some ongoing investigation into the effect on asthma at certain times of the month.

Colds and sore throats are in a similar vein to asthma so there may be some truth in it.

rabbitstew · 30/04/2010 09:55

mosschops30 - anaemia can affect the immune system. Look at this leaflet (at the bottom under "complications"). If the mirena coil meant you lost less blood each month and now you are having heavy periods again, it stands to reason you may be more anaemic as a result if you already have a problem with this, particularly around the time of your period.

rabbitstew · 30/04/2010 09:57

ps bacon has an interesting point. If all your "colds" have the same mild symptoms, it might be worth checking whether it could be rhinitis.

MadameCheese · 30/04/2010 10:04

Glad to see this as I've also had three colds one after the other in the first 3 months, I put it down to reduced immunity in pregnancy. I get colds but this is ridiculous plus they've also been particularly unpleasant viruses.

mosschops30 · 30/04/2010 13:49

but its not just nasal symptoms, I get sore throat, then cough. Just like a normal cold but less heavy IYKWIM, I can pretty much keep going with it and dont need to go to bed.
I had four courses of antibviotics plus antivirals after having ds2 (two ops followed by rip-roaring mrsa) so Im wondering if thats had some bearing on the immune system.
Having been anaemic since I was 14 its unlikely to be that

OP posts:
inthesticks · 01/05/2010 21:51

Nope.
I have mirena as well as asthma and hay fever.Never been aaemic. There is no confusion between having asthma/hay fever and a cold virus. Cold+ sore throat, fever, runny nose etc. Not the same as just rhinitis.
I have been convince for 20 years that there is a direct link between being pre- menstrual and being more susceptible to picking up viruses.
