laser treatment for abnormal smear - results mismatched and now she's pregnant

Hello All

My friend recently had laser treatment after an abnormal smear and colcoscopy. She asked if she could start ttc and told yes as everything was fine.

A couple of weeks ago she had a letter saying that her results were "mismatched" and to come to another appt in 6 weeks, and not to get pregnant.

She has just found out she is pregnant, already being pregnant when she got the letter.

Do you think this is a problem? To be honest I am quite confused with the whole thing, and quite horrified that she was told everything was fine after treatment and to go and conceive, and then was told everything was not fine later on.

Am that your friend was given the wrong results and the next appointment offered is 6 weeks! I'd be expecting the hospital to be falling over themselves to get her in and explain the next steps rather than leave her so long.

I suppose whether being pregnant is a problem depends on what the Drs want to do next. Whatever treatment they might want to give, the Drs have to deal with the fact that she is now pregnant. It might not be ideal, but they have to work with the situation as it is.

I'm sorry your friend is in this position it seems she has been really let down by her hospital.

'Mismatched' can mean that there's a difference between the grade of abnormality suggested by the referral smear and the outcome of the colposcopy treatment.
Usually where there's a difference the cytology and histology are reviewed and discussed at an MDT (multi-disciplinary meeting). So I think it's probably a poor choice of wording rather than a patient mix-up.
To pick on what bananaketchup says -
I think it's unlikely that if there had been a patient mix up that they would have told her in a letter like that and then asked her to wait 6 weeks.
Particuarly in view that she is now pregnant I would suggest that she call the colposcopy unit and ask them to explain what the letter means - I hope she gets good news.
