Calpol after being sick?

BythewayItsBratley · 26/04/2010 14:43

I gave DS (2.8) some Calpol as his temperature has been high all morning, he's just cried all morning but if I ask if he hurts he just says 'I'm sad, Mummy'.
Anyway, he has just thrown up everywhere, less that 5minutes after having the Calpol. He then fell asleep and has just woken up after about 30 minutes and he's on fire his temp is still high, would you give him more Calpol or not?

You're probably OK to give him some more, but do you have some child nurofen/ibuprofen? That will also bring his temp down and you are definitely safe to use that.

Hope he feels better soon.

HumanAtLeast · 26/04/2010 14:46

No to more calpol though you could try children's ibuprofen. It's better at lowering a temp than calpol anyway.

All other measures too. Cool drinks if he can, stripped off, cool sponge to face and neck, fan in the room etc.

Have you seen a GP? Vomitting and a high temp should probably be given the once over just incase it's caused by an infection like tonsillitis or the ears.

Oh yes, I didn't think of giving him Nurofen, there's some in the cupboard.

He's now been sick on both sofas... ugh.

The one thing I hate more than jam is sick, bleurgh....

Thanks for reminding me about the nurofen! And the speedy reply

Is he any better Bratley?

BythewayItsBratley · 27/04/2010 09:21

Morning.
Yes he seems much better today.
He just laid on the sofa, totally naked, all afternoon yesterday. There was no more sick and he managed to eat a banana about 6pm.
Woke up 5am this morning absolutely roasting, gave him some more nurofen and he went back to sleep til 7.
He's just eaten his breakfast and is farting like a good'un at the moment!

Fingers crossed for a better day today!

Thanks again both of you for the advice.
Up to my neck in sick and all my level headed reasonable thoughts went out the window!

Oh it's horrid. We've all just had norovirus here (I was HumanAtLeast yesterday) and it utterly wipes you out. The vomitting bit was over quite quickly although quite violent while it was there but the upset stomach hung around for a while.

DD couldn't keep water down, let alone anti-pyretics and I just concentrated on giving her fluids in small sips, hoping it didn't come straight back up.

Gastro bugs are hideous. Fortunately, they bounce back as quickly as they became ill. DD was v sleepy in the days afterwards. Normal apparently, takes a lot out of you.

BythewayItsBratley · 27/04/2010 09:49

That sounds a lot like our house yesterday, just hoping I don't get it!

He was definitely violently sick, it was coming out of his nose!

He was so thirsty he kept asking for a drink but if I gave him some he was glugging at it then bringing it back up.
He said 'But mummy, I need all of my water, my tummy's grumbly' in such a pathetic tiny voice I felt awful for stopping him drinking every few sips!
He was so weak he couldn't even sit himself up, just so unlike him, usually he can't sit still!

Hope you're recovering quickly, and your DD.
Wouldn't wish that on anyone!

Glad to hear the vomiting's stopped - hope he gets better today.

When DD2 was taken to A&E with a vomiting bug at 11 months old, they got me to syringe water, 5mls every 5 minutes. into her cheek. It seems to stay down better that way (trickles into the stomach so doesn't seem to set off the vomiting reflax).

ShowOfHands · 27/04/2010 10:17

It is hard when they're thirsty and they want to gulp it down but you know in approximately 3 minutes it's coming straight back up again. A spooon or a syringe is a good idea and quite a novelty for them. Ice lollies are good too.

We're all fully recovered. We were on holiday. My parents, dh, dd and me. We all had it. We spent a week getting to know the bathrooms of the villa at Center Parcs. Occasionally a member of staff came in, changed the beds (and at one point, dd's mattress), replenished toilet rolls and ran for their lives. It was desperately horrid as holidays go.

I really hope you don't get it. Incubation period with noro is pretty short so if you're going to get it, it takes hours usually. You might escape it! Worth pointing out though that you remain contagious for about 3 days after the last symptom goes. So keep wiping down, give him his own towel, boil wash anything he uses/is ill near/sleeps in or on and hope for the best. I've only ever caught it once but am quite scrupulous about handwashing and disinfectant and boil washing etc.

I hope he continues to improve.

BythewayItsBratley · 27/04/2010 10:29

On holiday? Oh no! Did you get to enjoy any of your time away!?

Poledra, thats what I did in the end, he likes to depress the syringe himself when he has medicine so I let him use the syringe for water.
Medicine spoons when I was younger seem so boring in comparison to Toddler DIY medicine

I had a stomach ache last night but seem fine this morning.
I think we'll walk into town for a bit of air later, feel like a caged animal after being stuck in the house all day yesterday.

Whole holiday was a write off! Went away Monday-Friday. DD was the first to become ill on the Monday morning (in the car, on the way there), one by one we all caught it until the Thursday when there wasn't a well person left in the villa. Friday, the most human one of us packed up the cars (bowl in hand) and we dragged ourselves home. We considered going home early but figured at least we could try and get over it while not at home and go back to clean beds, clean towels etc.

We all lost weight though.

Stomach ache might have been anxiety, fatigue etc. DD and DH have both had gastro bugs in the past and I never get them or just get a mild stomach ache and nothing else. My Mum always jokes that you're too busy to be ill. She might just be right.

Go for a walk. Good idea. It's lovely outside I believe.

BythewayItsBratley · 27/04/2010 11:01

Oh thats really awful, I'm be writing to Centre Parcs and tugging on their heart strings for a discount voucher for next time!

Can understand you wanting to stay there while ill though. Can you imagine the journey home with at least one of you chucking up!?
Bleugh.

I have to say, its not very often that I get ill, I seriously don't have the time or the network of people to help out! DH is a squaddie and if he's away I just can't be ill!

I remember when DS was tiny, DH came home from work with a stomach bug, he spent a full few days in the bedroom or bathroom, I kept DS well away from him and tried to stay away as much as I could.
After a few days he was totally recovered, if a bit tired. thats when I went down with it, it was like my body was waiting til he was completely better before giving in!

Right, off for a walk, house'll still look like crap when I get home.
