strange sore patch on ds tongue

hi my ds is 17 months and since around 4 months he keeps getting a red, pink patch on his tongue, its usually starts off on one side at the back and is like a smooth indentation,it gets bigger and bigger then fades, sometimes with a white edge but smooth in the middle, like there are no taste buds he sticks his fingers in and fiddles with it and i do think it is sore,it puts him off his food sometimes too, it sometimes covers over half his tongue and then it calms down to return a week later, it does seem to coincide with teething but lately it has been pretty constant and has started to appear on the other side too, i have seen 1 maxi facial specialist but it was not there at the time of the appointment so he did not even look but said it didnt sound serious, he has had a blood test to check his vitamin levels and they were fine. I feel like ive been fobbed off and no one know what it is, 2 doctors have now seen it when its there and they have no idea what it is and have never seen anything like it, has anyone else ever heard of anything like this, i cant keep ignoring it? thanks

I'd get him seen by a dentist - more expertise in that area than GP's .

i re posted it under childrens health and someone told me exactly what it is, geographic tongue! i have googled it and it deffinatly is that but im going to take him to the dentist to get it checked over.

I have had this for 6 years now and at first was prescribed several horrible creams to coat my tongue in, none of which worked. Now it comes and goes returning if I am slightly run down. It feels a bit like when you have burnt your tongue and the uncomfortableness lasts 3 or 4 days. I find that eating very healthily helps enormously. I can't use any kind of mouthwash and tend to stick to the same toothpaste - if I swap it sets it off again.

princess, did you go to the dentist? DS is 3 and gets something similar, but we haven't been to a dentist yet, and the doctor did not have any answers. Unlike your DS, it doesn't bother him at all though. Meggiemo, do you think it is related to eating more sugar than at other times?

Domestic With me I would say yes. If I have a lot of naughty foods like biscuits, cakes or especially over christmas and birthday celebrations it sets if off again.

Sounds like geographic tounge, google it and see. Both myself and my little DD have this. It can be hereditary (sp?) and there is nothing to get rid of it. Its harmless though and no-one knows why it happens. DD has a flare up at the moment and says everything is "spicy"! Poor thing. It does feel like its been burnt or tender for a few days.
