weight gain worries

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and have gained 7 lbs so far. Reading the health books, I think this is a bit too much, but being my first pregancy I really don't have a clue. My midwife didn't bat an eyelid at my check up this week, but I don't even have a bump or anything yet. Just where has that 7lbs gone? I eat normally, plenty of wholegrains etc. I have one day a week (junk food Fridays) where I have a curry, but that's it. I try to do the 30 active mintues a day thing too. I was a healthy BMI to begin with... just don't want to be setting myself up for trouble later on with losing it all. Any words of experience/advice?

are you eatin gmore than normal?

I put on just over 14lbs in my pregnancy- and 7.5lb was baby.

I think they reckon weight gain around 1.5 stone is accpetable.

It was along time ago for me- others will come along nad help.

i didn't put weight on until 5 months gone, then by the end i was over 3 stone heavier!

I did however bloat a lot in early pregnancy, and didn't actually have a good appetite either, i think i went overboard towards the end when i was constantly hungry.

You are probably just carrying a bit more fluid, it won't be fat yet so i wouldn't worry.
have you been checked for twins?

I wouldn't say you have anything to worry about.

good luck

it depends on your starting weight i.e. if you are underweight to start with then you can gain more than if you start off overweight. I only gained a stone but was very heavy to begin with. See this link for more info:

weight gain in pregnancy

I wouldn't bother about it if you are eating healthily and keeping active. Different people put on weight at different times during their pregnancies - some even lose weight at first, whereas others put most of their weight on in the early weeks. Also, not all weight gain is fat or baby - you do tend to carry extra fluids in pregnancy, too.

Thanks for the advice, I had a normal bmi to start with but 7lbs just feels like a lot when there's no bump to show for it. Just don't want to end up with a weight loss struggle later on!

I put on about 7lbs over the same time frame during my pregnancies. I was at the low end of a normal BMI to start with, but I don't see why that would be the reason for putting on more weight than average if you haven't deliberately changed the way you eat and haven't altered the amount of exercise you get - it's just the way your body deals with pregnancy (pretty damn efficient, I'd say...). In fact, I'm sure I put on more weight than average over my whole pregnancy both times around. All I can say is, losing the weight again wasn't an issue at all - I didn't have a problem with my weight or diet prior to pregnancy and didn't have a problem afterwards. Within 8 weeks I was worrying more about getting enough to eat so as not to get too thin, with a baby to look after and breastfeed, than I was about losing any weight.

I put on quite a lot of weight when I was pregnant, although a lot of its was also fluid. i felt that staying active really helped. I was frustrated as I wanted to keep up regular exercise and I found that I couldn't accommodate myself in the gym. I managed to find the best trainer (who is gay) and knew so much about pregnancy. I was worried about what to do and what I shouldn't do. I started this training programme and it made me feel good that I was able to do gentle but effective excersise. It also do wonders for back pain as I was aware of my posture. I have continued training post pregnancy unaware of the limitations I would have as I suffered from Diastasis Recti where the abdominals tear. My trainer was again experienced in this and I have managed to close the gap in my abs and get my figure back. I dont know what I would have done without him. Regualr walking and gentle work can help keep you in shape as I certainly felt like I was expanding so much. I hope this helps.
