Prickly Heat treatments ??

Just wondering if anyone has any tried and tested treatments for prickly heat that actually work ??

I've just come back from Spain and I got it a few days into the holiday and its starting to get better now at home again. Its horrid as its red, itchy, very sore especially at night and quite unsightly.

I seem to get it worst on my arms, backs of hands and neck and top of chest.

Does anyone else suffer with it and what things have you tried that actually work ?

I have had plenty of holidays spoiled over the years by prickly heat and have tried everything - different sun tan lotions etc but nothing ever helped apart from keeping out of the sun,(which kind of defeats the purpose of the holiday!)
A pharmacist abroad suggested taking antihistamines for about 2/3 weeks prior to being in the sun and this has made all the difference.
I take one zirtek every day in the summer and I have never had really bad prickly heat for the last couple of years, including a recent holiday in eygpt in august!
Sometimes if at the beginning of summer when my skins not used to the heat I feel a slight prickle I will spash cold water on and get out of the sun but the antihistamine has really helped.

Many thanks Boocha for your reply. I had heard that antihistamines may work but another website I came across said they are no use at all!

Will definitely give Zirtek a go, sounds fantastic.

Do you take them even when you are in the UK summer or just when abroad in hotter temperatures?

Hi sparkle
Yes I just started taking them a couple of weeks ago because I suffer with hayfever from the tree pollen but I used to stop taking them about may/june when my hayfever stopped,
Then like I said the pharmacist suggested I take them for my prickly heat and I have never looked back.
Obviously they might not work for you but I really had tried everything for prickly heat.
I take one a day from April til august and have never had any problems.
If you feel your skin start to prickle splash water on and let it dry off (dont rub!)
Hope this helps, prickly heat is a nightmare!!

I put Eurax cream on mine - I find it really stops the itching. It is horrible - i'm getting it on my bikini line and I'm 30 weks pregnant!

Another vote for anti histhamines from me. We lived in Bangkok for four years, the first couple of weeks were unbearable, dh had a flash of inspiration and got me a packet. I never looked back.
