I'm a first-timer on MN, but need to hear from parents whose child has this nasty virus. Son has had lumps for 18 months. 2 GPs both say we have to let it take its course, but he is getting distressed, hating swimming & PE, and dreading starting secondary school in Sept. Lumps across torso, both arms, now on back, shoulders and neck. Anyone tried so-called miracle treatments on (mainly American) websites? Should I be more pushy with GP?

mrs clooney

how weird - my ds's would not budge - after only 3 days swimmimg in centerparcs they had gone red and totally disappered never to return. Not a help I appriciate - as a weeks at centerparcs would be a very expensive - but fun for your ds - cure!

hi, i got some cream from the health food shop - Weleda...Green tube. sorry, i know it's vague, but the 'bubos'faded overnight. i honestly don't think it was a coincidence as she'd had them for almost a year...worth a try...

My 4 yr old has had MC for about a year and I am so fed up of it. We have tried some homeopathic cream but she also has eczema and the cream (and tea tree or any other strong cream) causes her eczema to flare up which causes more itching and I am sure more spreading of the MC. I know it is not serious in the grand scheme of things but I am really self conscious of it for her (though she isn't herself yet). Does anyone have any suggestions for hastening up the antibody reaction in a child with eczema? She also won't let me get near them so I don't fancy my chances with the toothpick regime! Also, any advice on what to say to other parents - we are due to go on holiday with other families soon and all the kids will be in the pool together.

hi everyone it was me that had total success with the iodineand a cocktail stick. Got the info from an old dermatolgy book when i was a medical rep. Tried the method of pricking them with a cocktail stick dipped in iodine. The physical trauma to the molluscum triggers off a chain reaction in them and then they disappear after a period of being slightly inflamed. Gp told me there was nothing we could do but DS1 was having the micky taken out of him at school so i was desperate. It worked for us.

My son has had molluscum for about 14 months now, I didn't do anything when I first noticed it as I didn't know what it was and thought it would clear up. A friend said it was molluscum and I had it confirmed at the doctor. It started in his armpit and after about 6 months it was spreading down his arm and onto his tummy. He would scratch at them and that would make his ezcema flare up, but all the doctor advised was emollient cream to help the ezcema. I didn't feel I could take him swimming and he hasn't had a bath with his brothers for months, which he loved. Two weeks ago, I read something online about TCP so thought I'd give it a go. I have been dabbing it on undiluted every night (he gets 10p if he makes no fuss - it can sting if he has scratched them!) and they are drying up and going away. I am amazed and relieved to see such an improvement, without any attempts at squeezing them, just merely pressing a TCP-soaked cotton pad on each bump. I will post again in a couple of weeks, but it's looking really good so far!

Two of my children have recently had molluscum and we were told about Poxiderm a new natural treatment from the US. We treated both children - one cleared after 6 weeks and the other only has a few lesions left. We bougt it from the skin pharmacy in the UK.

Our son aged 8 has had it quite badly on his torso (it started with just 3 spots on his arm back in September) it also spread to both his arms, groin and a few spots on his face. He was quite distressed by it itching him and we were worried it would get worse. We bought an anti viral hand foam from Boots, about £6 and applied it twice daily and the spots have almost disappeared. This was very easy to do and we are amazed with how quickly it's healed.

Our son also does a lot of swimming and he was embarrassed by the spots and we didn't want to scare other children so we just put a white lycra sports skin top on him; most people think it's to stop him getting cold.

I know this is a zombie thread, but for anyone still reading and battling molluscum, we have recently had total success with treatment from a homeopath.

DS first developed MC in Sept 2013 and after a ton of research we went down the iodine and tea tree oil mix approach following the recent successful research study. After 8 weeks it was clearly not working (you need to use povidone iodine and the best I could get was betadine but this is heavily diluted with water).

The spots were going through the life cycle and spreading and he had one on his neck - I was scared it would spread to his face. He probably had about 40 spots in total of varying maturity.

So on the suggestion I read on another forum, I booked him an appt with a homeopath recommended by a friend. I was very sceptical but most of the other treatments would hurt and at 2.5 he finds being messed about with very stressful.

We had a 90min consultation in which I answered all kinds of questions about DS, about my pregnancy and labour with him, what both DH and I are like, what DS likes doing / is scared off / illnesses etc. At the end she gave us 5 little sugar pills - 2 for that evening, 2 the next morning and one for the next evening. 3 of the pills were for his homeopathic type and 2 were a remedy focused on skin issues.

We crushed the pills and mixed with water for him to take. The next evening all the spots had become hugely inflamed (even the very immature ones which wouldn't normally get to that stage yet) and after about 3 days, they started flatenning out. That was Dec 12. By jan 2 all that remained were little brown marks where the spots had been. They are still noticable now but fading all the time.

And the spots haven't returned.

Honestly, I was so sceptical but I'm blown away by how well it worked. I'm a regular poster (and never posted about homeopathy before so please don't think I'm trying to flog it!)

MC is so stressful for the parents and must be so horrible for older kids who understand they have something wrong. It cost is £50 for the session which isn't cheap but was well worth it. So if you're still battling, please do consider trying it. I can't tell you how pleased I am and grateful to the homeopath for getting DS clear.

sugarandspite · 25/01/2014 12:06

Just to add, the homeopath said she loves treating molluscum and deals with it fairly regularly.

Apparently the trick is to get the homeopathic 'type' remedy right which can sometimes take a couple of tries but once you've got the right one, the spots will just melt away - as they did in our case!

Theonlyoneiknow · 25/01/2014 20:46

We have a homeopathic GP at the practice. He prescribed thuja which really helped (along with putting drops of lemon myrtle oils in the bath to stop them spreading)

My daughter had this condition for well over 18 months. Went to the doctors and they were useless. Tried several treatments ourself, nothing worked. By chance my daughter mixed vicks Vapo rub and germolene cream together , put in on her molluscium spots and covered with a plaster over night. By the morning they had gone right down. Just continue to do this and they are nearly gone.. Amazing!
