Eye Floaters

Hi there - during my thrid trimester I developed lots of little black eye floaters in both eyes. Went to the opticians who said there was nothing wrong. These floaters are still persisting and I wondered if they were anything to do with my pregnancy. Has anybody else experienced them and, if so, did they get better with time?

I had them, but not whilst pg. They are little strands of protein from your eye, which snap off from time to time, in my case because the shape of my eye puts a lot of pressure on the structure of my eye (very short sighted, so eye is very "round" rather than oval). They when away, but I had them in association with flashes of white light in the back of my eye. Th einside of my eye had just come away from my retian a bit (not as serious as it sounds) which was corrected, quickly and eaily on NHS with laser surgery. Not they type for correcting bad eyesight though!

Hi, echops, your floaters are unlikely to be due to a retinal tear/detachments as the other lady described as you wouldn't now be able to see! Plus the optometrist would have checked for holes and tears when they examined you.
I'm afraid floaters don't easily disappear, sometimes they break up slightly and get reabsorbed, but often you just get used to them being there and notice them less often.
If you do start getting flashing lights, curtains across your vision, or reduced vision you need to get your eyes checked again.

Hi Karoleann - have been to eye hospital who said the floaters weren't 'proper' floaters but debris in the tear film - will these disappear with the drops I've been given?

Yes, they will.
Were they corneal filaments and have they given you Ilube?
Floaters are cells in the vitreous humour rather than the tear film which is in front of the eye. Hope they go soon x

Hi Karoleann - thanks so much for replying. Doc didn't say what kind of debris they were - they're just a lot of spots and thin threads. Have been given a week's course of Celluvis - they seem to have got a little better but there's still quite a lot there - just hope they go soon.
