Anyone else experienced short term depressive symptoms following large consumption of alcohol?

After going to supper around a friends house on Saturday night and consuming best part of a bottle of wine, I awoke feeling 'healthy' (i.e. no classic hangover symptoms) but completely in the emotional doldrums. I wasn't motivated to do anything, felt dispirited and flat, and ended up retreating to my duvet for a couple of hours at lunch time. I was misery personified. The whole day, I existed in a self pitying shell

Today, I am back to my old self

Have noticed this happening before after a lot of wine the previous night, so I am quite certain there is a correlation and will watch my alcohol intake in future.

Just wondering if anyone experiences similar symptoms?

I call that a hangover personally.

IvaNighSpare · 19/04/2010 12:49

Alcohol is a depressant....

elportodelgato · 19/04/2010 12:51

yes, sounds familiar! I always need my DH to give me a LOT of cuddles, he finds me very irritating on thos days
horrid feeling though

winnybella · 19/04/2010 12:53

yes, same here, although I would be a bit hangover if I drunk almost a whole bottle of wine. It makes me feel down and anxious. Not after 2 or 3 glasses, though.

darkandstormy · 19/04/2010 15:19

makes me feel very anxious depressed, and also a bit paranoid.I try to keep it to half a bottle max on these occasions, however doesnot always work that way.

PhoenixRising · 19/04/2010 20:12

Definitely not the same as a hangover PuppyMonkey which is surely more about the physical symptoms of dehydration such as headaches, nausea etc ? Nope, this is about feeling physically ok but incredibly emotionally low

Alcohol is a depressant and some people are more badly affected by it than others. Body chemistry at work. Some alcoholics get that way precisely because they treat that 'flat feeling' you describe with more alcohol in an effort to feel normal... setting up a vicious circle. Sounds like limiting yourself to a glass or two would make a lot of sense

Yes, I drink very rarely but if I were to, I make it a point to have company the next day. It hits me 24-36 hours late, very depressed.

TotalChaos · 20/04/2010 07:32

yep. If I'm going through a low patch then just the one glass is enough to make me feel v. down the next day.

I've never enjoyed drinking more than a glass or two at one time, because it has odd effects on me - eg waking up with a pounding heart in the middle of the night and feeling very deflated the next day. I seldom drink, because I feel only a small amount has quite a big impact on my behaviour and mood the next day, even though it has little or no impact on my behaviour at the time (I've never used alcohol to enable me to do things I'd be too uptight to do while sober, so tend to remain just as uptight while drinking!).
