chicken pox & 10 week old?

So DD is just over 10 weeks old and although she doesn't have any symptoms yet (i read its over a 10 day incubation period) I suspect she will end up having it and would like to know if there is anything I can do to help her other than just camomile (sp?) lotion. If she gets a fever should I give her calpol? Should I bother taking her to the dr or not? Has anyone any experience of having a fairly young baby with chickenpox? On the plus side she is breastfed so I hope this will give her some immunity.

Also reason why I think she might have it is because I think DH has it - he had a fever on Friday, some spots yesterday (which he was trying to blame our poor dogs and cats for, insinuating they have fleas) and many more spots today everywhere. He phoned NHS 24 and they basically said its too late trying to stop infecting anyone else at this point (ie 10 week old DD) and to go to hospital if he got any breathing difficulties etc, but no info on what we should do about DD.

if she is breastfed she is quite unlikely to get it, although it does happen.

i think all you can do is stock up on calamine!!

acqueous calamine cream is less drying than the lotion. If she gets a fever yes you can give calpol. My ds had it at 5 1/2 months and he coped better with it than dd did at the age of 3 1/2 years. It does make them more likely to get shingles as a child as ds has just had shingles at the age of 3. I never took my lo's to the doctor but did phone them to advise that they both had chicken pox.

chickenpox

mmm, I had read all the nhs stuff before, but it didn't really give me that much info specifically for a young baby and seems to go with if you are over 4 weeks you will be fine and dandy. At least it taught me not to go see my new neice (who is a week old today)... Would she sleep more or less do you think (more with fever or less with uncomfortable itchy skin?) or is this a wait and see kinda thing?

thisisyesterday, I was reading old threads and it seemed as though she would only get a mild case? but you think maybe she would not get it at all (yet)?

i believe if you have had chicken pox yourself then you pass on that immunity to her.
there are/have been cases where breastfed babies have got chicken pox, but I think it's quite unlikely

acebaby · 18/04/2010 20:20

They usually have some immunity from you until around 6 months (placental antibodies) so often don't get it, or if they do get it, it is mild. A friend's baby had chicken pox at this age and it was very mild. She had about 20 spots and was fine in herself.

I am not a medical person, so do check my info with a doctor!

Mine had it at 12 weeks, exclusively breastfed but still got it from DD1! Wasn't too bad and shecouldn't reach most of her spots. Some question over whether she'll get it again. Calpol possible from 2 months according to GP! Good luck!
