Thrush in pregnancy. Pharmacist won't give me anything, so I have some yoghurt, but what exactly do I do with it?

So I think I have thrush. I say I think as I have only ever had it once before and that's when I was pg last time (why might that be?).

Anyway, the pharmacist wouldn't give me anything but just suggested yoghurt. I just don't have the time to go to the dr's having had a week off sick, physio and MW appointments and dentist on Monday. So will the yoghurt really help? And I know this is a really stupid question, but what exactly do I do with it?

why can't you use canesten???

clayre · 17/04/2010 18:43

your midwife could give you a pessary, call her on monday and ask!

Slugbrains · 17/04/2010 18:45

No idea about the yoghurt. was going to say i got pessary prescribed through the docs. Had it repeatidly when pregnant.

Apparantly eing pregnant can affect the delicate balance there and make you more susceptible to it.

Hope you get some relief soon.

ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 18:45

see if the mw can get a quick px for you for pessary while you are at your appt. perfectly safe,i'm a mw and thrush is more common in pregnancy.
Need probiotic natural yoghurt. eat loads of it. put some on sore bits.some people recommend inserting a tampon soaked in the yoghurt for a while. The good probiotic bacteria can help get rid of the thrush.
Pessary/internal cream much quicker imo though.
You can buy it off the shelf at my local asda but it is about a tenner , bit dear when you can get free pxs!

This happened to me after a course of antibiotics in my last pg, i was fed up as i knew from previous pgs that its safe as houses,I went to the daycase unit in the afternoon and they got me a prescription straight away - ohhhh the relief - phone your midwife- hope it gets better soon

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 17/04/2010 18:59

Thanks. What I meant is I have had MW and physio appointments in the past week. It's just the dentist on Monday, but do you think the Dr or MW will give me a prescription without seeing me.

I could always ask the dentist...

I don't know that I can't use canestan in pregnancy, but the pharmacist won't give it to me without the say so from my dr . You'd think they would come to some kind of agreement about what they will and won't give, so I don't have to see the bloody dr for everything.

get your dh to get some from the chemist

ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 20:38

canesten is safe in pregnancy-promise!
my dh got some for me a while back, just brief him to say no if they ask if you are preg.
again then u have to pay again though.
your dr may well do you a px you cd pick up if you ring up and ask.or your mw.

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 17/04/2010 20:39

Another question, TMI sorry, but is it still ok to have sex with thrush. Normally I am happy for any excuse not to , but you know those pregnancy hormones...

moaningminniewhingesagain · 17/04/2010 20:45

Canesten fine in pregnancy, get someone else to buy it or off the shelf in supermarket. The GP will be happy to do a prescription from a phone consultation IME.

You can have sex if you want but aren't you sore?? And you might pass it to DP who could reinfect you...and he probably wouldn't have any symptoms. So best not really

stripeywoollenhat · 17/04/2010 20:54

you can use canesten in pregnancy: the reason the pharmacist wouldn't let you have it is probably that you should check with your gp that it's not something else, as some normally fairly benign, if icky, vaginal infections are not always so benign in pregnancy, so if you aren't sure it's thrush, maybe you should go to the gp. if you're sure it's thrush though, send dp/mum/friend to the chemist for you. yoghurt is a waste of time, and smells horrid.

Laugs · 17/04/2010 20:54

My MW told me to tell the pharmacist she'd told me to buy it, which worked fine.

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 17/04/2010 21:07

Well, it's not really sore. I'm not sure how long I've had it. I've had yucky mucusy stuff almost since I got pg. I had a twinge a few days back, but then went, and only noticed it today as I have been walking around town all day and started to feel a bit sore. It's only the second time I've had it though so not really experienced in thrush type matters. The first time I had it I thought it was a UTI

DH says he doesn't have it. Can it be symptomless?

One more question, what's best for sleeping in? PJs on their own but washed daily, or with knickers or no bottoms?

OP posts:
ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 23:28

anything loose and 100% cotton, but nothing would be even better!
When i get thrush its really sore and feels like its burning hot and itchy. Could no way contemplate sex!!!
a heavier clear/whitish discharge is normal in pregnancy though, thrush discharge is supposed to be more like cottage cheese...
Maybe you don't have it

GwennieF · 19/04/2010 15:05

I am 29 weeks and have had thrush more or less constantly for the last 4-5 months... The Phamacist would't give me anything either but I went to see the doc, who gave me a prescription for canesten on a few separate occasions. It only seemed to work for a little while and then it would be back, worse than ever and I was getting oral thrush at the same time.

Eventually I got rid of the oral thrush by using a chlorhexadine mouthwash twice a day for three weeks. The downstairs thrush seems to be on the wane at the moment as well, but have given up on canesten.... The last doc I saw said that the yeast might have developed a resistance to the clotrimazole (active ingredient in canesten) so she prescribed a 2 week course of miconazole nitrate for me. I'm only halway through the course but it seems to be working better than the canesten ever did.

If you don't have time to get into the docs you can buy it as Daktarin - which is what she recommended me to get for DH (he needed his own tube as he works away). She also told me to have those little Yakkult/Actimel drinks as the bacteria in them helps aswell (I had always presumed that it was promotional b#ll#x). And she said to eat more plain yogurt and even to put it on the affected areas as it would help with the irritation.

I hope you get it sorted soon - not the most glamorous part of pregnancy....

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 19/04/2010 18:42

Thanks for the advice. I found a pharmacist who would give me saome canestan cream. It hasn't cleared it up so far. I'll give it till next week then I'll go to the dr, or I'll at least ring them later this week.

AuntieMaggie · 19/04/2010 18:47

Please get it checked out properly - friend of mine thought she had thrush and it ended up being strep b!

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 19/04/2010 20:56

I will do, don't worry. Is strep b only an issue for when you are due to give birth? I'm only 18 weeks so don't have to worry about that yet.

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 19/04/2010 21:01

your DH can have it without knowing.

He needs to smear the canesten on his willy to make sure he does not give it back to you.

ellasmum1 · 20/04/2010 10:09

Bumperliouzzzzzz- do you mean the internal cream or external.
If external thats not going to clear it up.
you need a pessary/internal cream to properly treat it.
Do you definitely think its thrush?
