Lump in 9 yr old DDs breast

Hi all, first post so hoping I do everything right

DD is 9 yrs old and has complained of her left breast hurting over last few days. Upon checking it today can feel a smallish lump under nipple, which hurts her if pressed.

Have arranged docs appt for Monday, but wondered if any of you have any experience of this? Obviously, my mind is working overtime....although thinking rationally it could be the start of puberty or is this far too young?

Going out for the day shortly but will be back on line later and would really appreciate any advice, thanks.

It's probably a cyst, they are really common. It may go on it's own or need draining/removing. Has she had a viral illness recently?

Well worth taking her to the docs but you may find it vanishes before then.

Think it is quite normal. I remember a school friend saying she'd had a sore lump there. She and her mum had gone to the doctor about it and he'd said it was a sign she was going to start "growing". I was well jealous. I had the same thing (a few years later!). IIRC, it's quite painful.

Good to go to the docs to put your mind at rest though.

No illness recently, although she has since told me her brother caught her in chest when playing last week so could be linked.

Thanks for your quick reply, appreciated.

it's a breast bud, the start of her breasts growing

NoahAndTheWhale · 16/04/2010 12:27

I remember having those before my breasts started growing. They were painful but went away as the rest of breast caught up.

WhyMeWhyNot · 16/04/2010 12:31

My son and daughter both had this, it's called a breast bud, nothing to worry about just normal tissue movement in the breast.
Calpol if she's sore would be fine and of course a trip to the Gp if you're concerned.

Goingspare · 16/04/2010 12:36

Breast bud, surely. I remember being taken to the doctor with the same thing at age 10 and the doc asking ponderously 'Is it tender?' and not knowing what he meant (had only come across tender with reference to meat before that...)

Your gp will be happy to check.

I have just had this with DD 10. She has breast buds but one was more painful, red and warm. We went to doctors who said it was a breast infection. We were given seven days anti biotics and it has now cleared up.

ChickensHaveSinisterMotives · 16/04/2010 13:38

I remember this happening to me just before my breasts started to grow. Think its just puberty.

I took my daughter age 5 yesterday as she had them both sides and we were told that they were breast buds and they are caused by a hormone surge.

For my daughter it is likely they will go away and then come back when she is around 9. Sounds like the start of puberty but best to get it checked out.

Deffo breast buds, still go the doc tho to be sure
