Dentists - nhs or private?

We moved fairly recently and I'm trying to find us a family dentist. So far all the local practises will not take on NHS patients. We were nhs patients where we lived before, but last year I had to have some work done, which I was required to pay for as they couldn't do it - nothing cosmetic (tooth removed). I was a bit surprised that this wasn't covered within the three tiered pricing structure - I had to pay a few hundred pounds.

I'm not sure what to do - I would like a better service tbh for example I'd like a dentist to talk to the dc's about how to brush their teeth etc. All our dentist would do was look at their teeth and that was it - 1 min in the chair and then onto the next one. However with three dc's I can't afford to pay a fortune for dental treatment.

Any ideas? what about dental insurance - is that worth looking at?

My practice treats DC on the NHS as long as I registered private with them -- kind of best of both worlds, in theory.
