I slipped my L5 S1 disc 4 weeks ago, pain is unbearable, won't bore you all with major details, suffice to say that this has completely disabled me and has changed the dynamic of our family totally.

I am still taking tramadol and ibuprofen alternately at 3 hourly intervals and despite this am still in a huge amount of pain , have had an MRI scan and am awaiting another visit to consultant next week.
The thing is, he says that I will have to convince him that he should put me forward for surgery and that his first instinct is to leave it to heal itself.
Although I am not desparate for surgery I am terrified that this may / will happen again and am also concerned about how long it is taking me to heal.

So...........should I push for surgery?? Any advice much appreciated!!

Have you seen a physiotherapist? Some kinds of disc problems can be eased by the right kinds of exercise - DH had one, and the physio gave him gentle stretching exercises to push it back the right direction. Made the world of difference and he didn't have to have any surgery. It still niggles sometimes, but the exercises keep it at bay, and it hasn't ever gone back to the agony stage.

I'd avoid surgery if you can get it back under control by other means - backs are tricky things and surgery isn't a miracle cure.

My boyfriend always makes me go on top, he says it's his slipped disc stops him from thrusting. I'm unsure though. He manages OK when I am on all fours.

My initial thought was to ask for physio (and I may still do that) just seem to be going round in circles at the moment - goodish day, bad 3 or 4 days, little sleep. Just a bit down with it all really and want it over!!
Thanks for answering though.

It's worth seeing a physio whatever else you decide to do - they really can help, even if it's just ways of keeping the pain down. DHs disc responded best to stretching his back the "wrong" way IYSWIM? But you'd have to go through it with an expert to work out what's the right thing to do for your specific one.

But back pain is a real hassle, you do have my sympathy, it makes everything so difficult.
