Adverse reaction to OILATUM

Queenslander · 12/04/2010 10:49

My son(12)was prescribed Oilatum cream which is okish (slight reaction) but this time GP also prescribed OILATUM shower gel. His skin is now massively inflamed and red and very hot to the touch. Has anyone else had really adverse reaction to Oilatum and any idea which ingredient/s are the issue.
Also any alternatives tried by those who reacted the Oilatum that were OK?

Has it got sodium lauryl sulfate or SLS in the ingredients?

cos that is an industrial oil cleaner bt it foams nicely so they put it in most high street things.

Aveeno

sorry pressed post by mistake

as you can imagine it is very harsh and not very skin friendly at all.

What is your Ds' problem to be prescribed that? is it eczema?

Queenslander · 12/04/2010 11:02

They do not think it is eczema but it "looks" like it. He has sensitive skin with lots of little bumps mainly on the upper arms and cheeks. If he is ill it will always be his skin that goes first.

Does not react to normal shampoos/gels etc so pretty shocking that Oilatum caused a problem. He is allergic to bee stings and penicillen but nothing else.

GP does not think it is eczema so maybe a dermatologist next.

I'm no expert but I would look at the ingredients in anything. It's a real eye opener,

maybe try Aveeno like Mrsbadger suggests. It has good reports if you search on here for it.

He is allergic to mineral based products, so you must avoid these in future. My dd was allergic to all these petroleum based eczema products - and baby oil which is also mineral based.

I would ask for a referral to a dermatologist, and also have allergy testing.

Oilatum bath stuff made my daughter's skin go red(der). She had it for eczema. We now get doublebass bath stuff on prescription and use epaderm as soap.

I always Johnson products for babies harsh so that may explain why.
Would a dermatologist do allergy tests? In the NHS? Do you know.

IYO is the mineral thing connected to the penicillen and bee reaction also?

Aveeno has Parrafin (mineral oil in it) so it is also a problem. Does anyone know of a brand that does not include mineral oil (parrafin, petroleum jelly)?
