Can someone please fill me in on some details please. I have to have my wisdom teeth out under general anaesthetic and the fear I have inside me is unreal. I have heard its a drug induced coma! The thought of my life being in someone elses hands is an awful feeling. What is it like as u go to sleep? Do they put people out really deeply for wisdom teeth extractions? Is it the same depth of sleep as a major op? I'm totally freaked out and I'm in such a state. I can't eat or sleep all I'm doing is worrying about this. If anyone has any experience in this could u let me know what its like please?

Try not to worry, the anaesthetist has had many years of training. I know it's worrying, I've had a general anaesthetic twice and I have been in an operating theatre as staff more then a few times and I promise you that they will take really good care of you.

When you go into the operating department you will go into the anaesthetic room first. They will put a small needle into the back of your hand and they will put some milky stuff into the cannula. This is when you will drift off to sleep. You won't remember anything as you are technically asleep, they do the same thing when they place people into a drug induced coma but all the medication does is make you go to sleep. They will put a tube into your mouth, it'll go down your throat a little way and they will put a little gas through the tube, it's the gas and the medication that will keep you asleep. When they have removed the teeth they will change the gas over to oxygen and you will slowly wake up, when you are not quite awake they will remove the tube and an oxygen mask will be placed over your face, you may be aware of what's going on at this point, you may be sick which is normally the blood that you have swallowed. It is the same sleep as all other operations but you will only be under the anaesthetic for less then 10 minutes, long enough for them to remove the teeth. Your gums will be sore when you wake up, they should give you something for the pain.
It'll be OK. I work in a hospital so I know what the staff are like, I can honestly say that I have trust and faith in everyone that I work with. Once it's done then you won't need it doing again.

I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed under a GA in sept. I was very scared as I had never been under a GA before.

I was put under and half an hour later they woke me up, I felt completely fine afterwards and walked out of the hospital 2 hours later like I hadn't had anything done.

I had a GA, for something different, but was scared about being asleep and completely at someone elses mercy.

It was fine, I went straight off (I was afraid I wouldn't be able to go and would end up being awake) and woke up none the wiser and was fine.

I have had 4 GAs (for other things) and they are fine , really really quite a pleasant sensation of going to sleep. I also found I woke up totally well, no nausea or hungover feeling at all.

Do tell the anaesthetis how scared you are and they can give you something to make you feel less anxious which will also mean they need less medication to put you under.

Is there a particular reason why your wisdom teeth are being extracted under GA in the first place? I had all 4 of mine done under local anaesthetic and certainly on 1 occasions I would have been glad to have been asleep...

I am certain thinking about it just now is far worse than what the reality of it is going to be like . Stop thinking of it as "drug induced coma" and remind yourself of what it also is: a way to undergo a painful procedure with No Pain. Surely that is a Good Think?

Good luck to you.

I had all my wisdom teeth and some jaw removed under a GA last year and the pain after was awful I was glad to have a GA.
Ive had 7 Ga's in total and the only trouble I have is sickness after but nowdays they give you anti sickness as they wake you. Also I have very low bp and they did keep me in last time to monitor my but aI think they were being a bit OTT. (The rest was nice though I had 3 DC at the time)
Tell the nurse your worries thay are always great at reassuring you and the anaesthetist can explain what there doing.
