Sinusitis

Any sufferers with wisdom to impart? I am tired, tired, tired of having sinusistis to the point where i'm just not enjoying life v much any more. I get it every spring and it rages on until the summer. I have had countless courses of anti biotics and last year acupuncture which did work for quite a while but did involve me throwing up blood which was scary and unpleasant.

This year gp is trying me on anti inflammatories and becanase which is a new one on me!

Poor you - sounds nasty.

No experience myself but DH had major sinusitis. ABs several times a year etc etc. GP eventually said enough is enough and sent him to a specialist who found out that he is severely allergic to a couple of things and he also had an osteome (found via MRI) which was impinging onto his sinuses almost blocking them and thus leading to infections etc etc. He's had the lump removed and now we shall see if it makes a difference....

Good luck.

I had a camera up my nose which discovered polyps. I chose not to have the surgically removed but if you had these then you could decide if it was soemthing you wanted to go through with. You would need a referral to an ear nose and throat specialist.

thanks both of you. gp says if i get another fever with it i am being referred to ent.

My sinusitis has cleared up completely after having surgery to remove polyps, and taking nasonex (nasal spray steroid) daily. Life is totally transformed.

An osteome is a benign bone tumour. It is v. slow growing. One of the symptoms of having one is recurrent sinus infections and eye pain. DH's one got very large which is why it became a problem - it was the size of a golf ball!

loobylolly - i can imagine! sinusitis v debilitating.

mrfibble - sounds scary but similar to my symptoms. think i need to push for referral!

OP has no one suggested giving up dairy foods?

I always get sinusitis if i ever have dairy inadvertently (I've cut it completely at home, it's not easy when you're out) so i know i've got an intolerance.

Coldhands · 10/04/2010 11:47

I have sinusitis, I never knew they would even look at causes etc. I take a nasel spray every day and it seems to do the trick.

plimsolls · 10/04/2010 11:59

I often get it. One thing I do which I have found helps is every morning running shower at max temp for a few mins before I get in so bathroom gets really steamy. Seeems to ease the soreness. But my bathroom is tiny so very easy to trun into a virtual steamrom. If you are blessed with a normal sized bathrom it might not be an option.

BTW, I used to use Sudafed type nasal sprays but found that they made the problem worse in the long term.

Also tried sea water nasal sprays as thought they might cause fewer side effects than a sudafed type one. Felt that they did help (and because of the saltiness they helped draw out some of the water retention that made the sinuses swell) BUT shortly afterwards I had a horrendous cold which I thought might have been down to the saltwater "washing away" natural defences.

HTH

pp - i have in the past but i don't really eat much dairy anyway though i'd try it again to be sure.

plimsolls - i have a wet room so i'll give it a go!

thanks everyone x
